Watch: High-Definition Videos Of The Strokes Playing Radio 1’s Big Weekend

by Eric Van Dril · 50 comments

FINAL UPDATE All 12 songs from The Strokes’ Radio 1 Big Weekend Set can be seen here. Updated

It was difficult to watch The Strokes playing Radio 1’s Big Weekend for those outside of the United Kingdom. Luckily, the entire Strokes gig will likely hit YouTube in the next 24 hours.

To begin, here’s I Can’t Win and Hard To Explain. I’ll post more videos on this post as soon as I get them.

Under Cover of Darkness, New York City Cops, You’re So Right, The Modern Age and Someday after the jump.

Updated… Will you wait for me now?

They’re my vids 😀

2 Alex May 15, 2011 at 2:41 pm

The crowd was so dead during this show, it just shows how lifeless the majority of Radio One listeners are.

3 Stephanie May 15, 2011 at 2:58 pm

at least they seem peppier than at jazz fest. that was pri-ty lame

4 yeeeee May 15, 2011 at 2:58 pm

all top40 listeners thats why its predominantly a pop festival
its just irritating cos you want them to come back to the uk with a bang and it was short and a bit boring to be honest dont get me wrong they sounded great as usual i just think the atmosphere was a bit flat compared to the most amazing footage we see of festivals they have done.
i think they should do others in england because they did this which 99% of the tickets go to people that live around carlisle (very very unfair), the majority of people that applied were applying to see lady gaga and around 700,000 people applied while they gave out 20,000 tickets. so i think the crowd were quite unreceptive and they should be playing main stages at their level where thousands more people can see them so it was a strange booking choice in my opinion.
so someone like me who doesnt live near carlisle and who, against the rules (i was so desperate to see the strokes) applied a few times, still had a 0.000001% chance of ever getting a ticket.
and then they’re playing reading and leeds, im going to reading but obviously people that go to one dont go to the other so most strokes fans in england will so far only be seeing them once this summer until they tour.

Why does Julian not put any effort into singing Taken For a Fool?

6 Eric Van Dril May 15, 2011 at 3:15 pm

@James — They’re amazing. Thanks for uploading so quickly.

@yeeee — They get 700,000 requests? That’s insane.

@Pete — I didn’t mind him fucking up the lyrics before, but it’s just getting kind of old.

7 Tara May 15, 2011 at 3:25 pm

Whoa, I missed three whole songs; no wonder the set seemed so short! Cheers for posting them up so quickly, Eric.

@yeeee, agreed. It was a good show musically and all, but a bit lack-lustre compared to how they can be. I also think it was a weird choice for their first post-Angles UK show seeing as the majority of Radio 1 listeners aren’t going to be Strokes fans but they have such a huge UK fanbase who would have loved to see them! I’m waiting for them to play an actual concert now as I don’t think I can justify spending so much money on Reading when I’d pretty much be going to see The Strokes, plus I’ve seen them at a festival before and I kind of think a venue where *everyone* is there for The Strokes would be a pretty awesome setting. So I guess it’ll be after album 5, unless I get desperate/crazy and go to their Paris gig.

8 Nicole May 15, 2011 at 4:30 pm

crazyyy valensi solo in Modern Age.

9 neversaytodie4 May 15, 2011 at 4:34 pm

I think they were good. The crowd was fine to me…. but I agree with Pete, Taken for a Fool was bad.

10 Alexander Sooksri Henriksen May 15, 2011 at 5:01 pm

Didn’t seem like the strokes wanted to be there though. Julian Casablancas even sang “On the toxic fucking radio – fucking shit” which is kind of badass since they actually are playing on BBC’s radio festival.

11 neversaytodie4 May 15, 2011 at 5:22 pm

Guys, what’s up with the whistle on Under cover of darkness at 2:48 (live at bbc radio) ?
I thought that wasn’t supposed to be part of the song…

12 AC May 15, 2011 at 6:20 pm

What does julian sing/say during I Can’t Win after “oh I can’t win”? it’s really been bugging me…

13 Liv May 15, 2011 at 6:57 pm

is there a taken for a fool vid up yet?

14 emma May 15, 2011 at 7:58 pm

Thank you so much! 😀

15 Mat May 15, 2011 at 8:26 pm

This is just a theory, but I think Julian stuffs up the lyrics or sings badly when the crowd isn’t really that into it.
Like I’m sure he will have made sure he sang properly on Jools Holland.

16 Jordi May 15, 2011 at 9:42 pm

I honestly just think that Julian forgets which lyrics the band finally decided on for the record. It always seems he sings the version that didn’t make the cut

17 wolfman May 15, 2011 at 10:46 pm

they sound amazing, as always, just wish they’d mix up the set a little.

18 saywhat May 15, 2011 at 11:02 pm

Does anyone have a video from any of this album’s performances that show Julian talking to Nick or Nikolai during the set? I’ve seen him talking to Albert and Fab, but I haven’t seen him even look in the direction of the other two

19 Other Maria May 15, 2011 at 11:36 pm

Lol, maybe he just messes up taken for a fool all the time because he doesn’t like nick.

20 Iasmiine May 15, 2011 at 11:40 pm

I worked my ass off to get a ticket for Benicassim, just to see them live. If it’s true what everyone says and what it looks like and they don’t enjoy themselves anymore, I’ll return home with a broken heart the size of Mars.

@saywhat: He’s talking to them at the beginning of Taken For a Fool.

21 james May 16, 2011 at 12:22 am

what does he say in the chorus after iiiii caaaaaaaant wiiiiiiiiin, something something great idea?

22 April May 16, 2011 at 12:48 am

Thanks so much!!

23 JW May 16, 2011 at 2:01 am

the tickets for that festival were given out free – allocated to people who live closest to carlisle (not a really well renowned area for music gigs). Hence why the crowd were pretty dead, its just a variety of fans – not necessarily strokes fans.

24 Ema May 16, 2011 at 2:03 am

I think you shouldn’t worry… All people who were at Vegas or MSG said they were incredible and Coachella was also very good… I agree with Mat’s theory.
And maybe they were sick because of English food 😉
(The show was not that bad, by the way, but they can do better)

25 Juice May 16, 2011 at 4:09 am

Awesome. MUCH better than the Jazz thing. And is it just me or You’re So Right sounds really good this time around…

26 woon May 16, 2011 at 4:14 am

is this it tracks make up half of the set?
i know it was a short set but jesus

tho im glad juicebox hasnt been in the set the last few shows
the variation and mix up of the set could be way better
theyre sittig on classics fom room on fire, half of which havent been played this time round

would be nice to hear more of room on fire (way it is/watever hapened/1251)
and more first impressions tracks (ize/razor/redlight)
from the 1st 3 albums the only song never played was fear of sleep that includes bsides
and yet angles is being limited to 4 or 5 on most occasions, and just 3 yesterday (way to promote ur new record) and the ones they did sounded awful and lazy

under cover – will he ever remember the words or hit any right notes? hasnt done a decent verion yet
taken for a fool same story
machu needs to be played, surely they can come up with some kind of arangement
two kinds of happiness or metabolism too

nycc sounded awful last night
hard to explain was poor too

the line “everybody singing the same song for 10 years” is a dig at last nite right? and yet its in every set
if singles like 1251 and end has no end can be missing then im sure we can live without last nite

after the great energy of sweetlife the other week , it felt like finaly they wee getting it together, this was a huge let down, cant blame the crowd either, from the off julian seemed uninterested

this was a band that mattered, that changed the face of music, wheres the pasion gone
one year ago the live comeback promised so much, but its all cumbling away
id love them to prove me wrong

roll on album 5, maybe this time theyll write an album they can play live?

27 woon May 16, 2011 at 4:18 am

where is 1251 this year???

28 Juice May 16, 2011 at 4:32 am

@woon maybe YOU can live without Last Nite, I can’t. Just saying. I agree with you on UCoD though. *sigh

29 rou May 16, 2011 at 5:42 am

dang it, the videos aren’t available anymore.

30 James May 16, 2011 at 5:48 am

Yeah BBC got my youtube deleted, uploading the vids to my new account
They’ll be up soon but don’t tell the BBC 😉

31 Other Maria May 16, 2011 at 7:13 am

Jesus yeah when you compare their latest gigs to all the hyped excitement of stubbs it’s pretty depressing. That initial buzz felt like is this it all over again. That intensity’s all sort of faded away. To be honest i was also really pissed off at the new website. Why would they dismantle a really cool site for the dull crap they stuck up to replace it? It just seemed lazy and i can’t understand how whoever agreed to it thought it could be an improvement. I think it’s cuz julian doesn’t care about the band anymore and the rest of them just aren’t as bothered about all that stuff. Julian’s own website is still cool. And even when he updates it like he did with the lyrics, he put up background paintings and everything….

32 hey May 16, 2011 at 7:35 am

i dont agree that julian doesn’t care anymore but i feel like angles doesn’t really feel like a ‘strokes era’ yet compared with the other 3 albums
its a really good album but to me it feels like a step they need to take to make something better
also partly because they havent released any club/arena shows apart from a couple in the US and partly because they’ve hardly done any press i mean i’ve seen about 2 video interviews that lasted maybe 2 minutes each and read about 4 pretty depressing articles
nick said he wants to record the next one asap so hopefully we’ll get that and a world tour and it will feel like the return but til then we should get some better/bigger festival performances this summer

33 Sarah May 16, 2011 at 8:01 am

Does anyone have the full list of 2006 FIOE tour dates (including TV shows and festival) ? It does not seems to me that they are doing less festivals or TV appearances, beside of course gigs of their own. Well if tat interest anyone, I will be curious to compare…factually.

34 Nis May 16, 2011 at 9:48 am

Why the math were all the videos uploaded on one same account??? Now they’re all deleted… ;;_;;

35 good sport May 16, 2011 at 9:51 am

the strokes are playing PJ20 !!!

36 Iasmiine May 16, 2011 at 10:04 am

Oh btw l thought UCoD was good. He finally said ‘l want whats better for you’, ok? Haha

37 maddie May 16, 2011 at 12:49 pm

ahhh, julian sans sunglasses

38 lisa May 16, 2011 at 12:59 pm

why is everyone complaining? I thought TFAF sounded fine

39 katy May 16, 2011 at 1:57 pm

I’m a huge Strokes fan, I mean I love Julian & Co more than my family, and was fortunate enough to attend this gig, my first ever Strokes show after adoring them for 5+ years. I thought they were fantastic (but I am slightly biased). Played lots of crowd pleasers and a few less mainstream ones e.g. Take it or Leave it and I Can’t Win. I thought tracks from’Angles’ which I admit isn’t the best thing I’ve ever heard in my life fitted in seamlessly alongside the good old classics and worked really well. The set was definitely too short however, and not enough Room on Fire tracks! I felt Reptilia and Last Nite could do with being left out, but thats probably because I’m a snobby superfan who feels people who go ‘Hey isn’t that the song onGuitar Hero?’ should be put down. I’m hoping for Automatic Stop and Under Control when I see them at Reading. And For people saying the fans were boring they clearly didn’t attend; from where I was it was an awesome atmosphere. Viva la Strokes.

40 SharonGuitar500 May 16, 2011 at 6:53 pm

@Other Maria: Interesting theory, even though I think you meant it as a joke, maybe it is a bit true. This is not the first time he screws up so badly, really, he sucked. It could be possible that he did it on purpose, especially because it’s Nick’s song. Nick deserves the hate, but Julian’s not a perfect either. They can both be assholes. So if you’re theory is right, they just need to fucking grow up. They’re not 18 anymore.

@katy: I agree about Reptilia, I’m tired of it. I’m a guitarist, so I’ve been asked to play Reptilia with about 10 different people when I tell them The Strokes are my favorite band. It’s not their best song… I would love to hear Under Control played live instead of Reptilia.

41 Agueda May 16, 2011 at 8:45 pm

nooooo! videos r down!!!

42 woon May 17, 2011 at 12:19 am

rememebr how ze newie (between love and hate??) was played all through the is this it tour, but as soon as room on fire came ot they never played it again, i wonder why? i always loved that song 🙁

43 woon May 17, 2011 at 12:22 am

as for julian not knowing the lyrics, hes that way with lots songs, he always writes the words last, so before he records it hes just been making stuff up, so i guess sometimes he forgets what words they settled on. i remember the old version of hard to explain being vastly different to the version we got, only a few months before too

44 thegoodguy May 17, 2011 at 12:41 pm

Yeah the videos are down….

45 Josh May 17, 2011 at 3:08 pm
