Interviews: Julian and the Voidz in NME, Julian talks ‘I like the night’

by Eric Van Dril · 44 comments

tumblr_nfal0rjTSv1sh5j3eo1_500This week has been full of Julian and The Voidz goodness, for me.

Not only did I see them on Tuesday in Chicago (I loved the show, and hearing Ize of the World totally caught me off guard), but a few good interviews have hit the internet recently. The big one is NME’s cover story.

The other one I found interesting is a Q&A with KUCI in Irvine. He talks about working on a full-length version of I Like The Night at the end.

Man anyone else really saddened by his “distant friends I don’t keep in with comment?”

2 Gary November 21, 2014 at 1:15 pm

“You mean distant childhood friends that I don’t keep in touch with anymore?” he said with the smallest of smirks and then muttering that he “still hung out with Albert.”

Honestly he had to be saying that sarcastically. I mean I doubt he talks with them daily or really even weekly but he did just play with them in August. Not to mention he’s got a wife and a son and he’s busy with new music and touring.

Personally I really like the current situation we have as fans. I honestly believe we’re getting the best of both worlds. We’re getting The Strokes collaborative efforts and were basically getting Julian let loose with the Voidz. While I like Tyranny I’m also not the hugest fan of it, but that’s not really the point. The point is that in general we are going to get consistently good Strokes music and experimental Julian.

I do sometimes wonder how much their “buddies-ness” enhances music of The Strokes. Like there is more of a relationship between their guitar parts than there actually is.

Also, it’s a downer to listen to music made by people who don’t enjoy each other’s company. Especially since it’s not supposed to be depressing music, either :\

5 Denis November 21, 2014 at 3:01 pm

Why does he needs to be a douche everytime he opens his mouth? Unbearable. I don’t give a fuck about the strokes private life but why does he need to come out as “honest” everytime, is rude of him to think that he lives alone in the world.

6 Human Radness November 21, 2014 at 3:33 pm

When talking about I Like The Night when he says “The band and I.” he is surely referring to The Voidz right? I feel like he would’ve specifically said it was The Strokes if that were the case. A crazy Voidz version of that song would be awesome!

7 Dia November 21, 2014 at 6:40 pm

You know what I’d really like to ask Casablancas? I’d like to know if he really thinks using ‘Z’ instead of ‘S’ all the time is somehow cool…in any way…whatsoever…

8 DebonairStatus November 21, 2014 at 8:26 pm

I was there in Chicago too! They were amazing. Maybe you saw me. Tall hair, black guy in front.

9 Human Radness November 21, 2014 at 10:03 pm

@Dia, I would imagine he thinks its very cool

10 Sega Blood November 21, 2014 at 11:19 pm

Isn’t the Irvine one an old interview? Maybe published for the first time now, but lots of quotes that seem pretty old. Like, pre-Governors Ball quotes. The NME interview is recent and seems to contradict the comments about TS as friends.

11 Ubu November 22, 2014 at 5:40 am

@Sega Blood
It’s quite recent, they mention the Observatory show where RoB was played, and the Rolling Stone’s Tyranny review.

If that bit about the childhood friends was true, that’s harsh… I wonder if the other guys care at all about JC saying stuff like that.

12 SteveSpoon November 22, 2014 at 8:57 am

Dude just loves to go back and forth on this. He says something negative about The Strokes, then tweets about how he likes playing with them, then he says in an interview that they’re working together, then he says this. He needs to make up with his mind already haha

13 Alan November 22, 2014 at 12:17 pm

I would just love to hear what REALLY went down.

There must have been something. Sure they all wanted to do solo stuff, all right, that may have caused some riffs in the band. But “something” definitely happened between two or more people, that caused shit to hit the fan.

My money is on Nick. Can we get a new discussing going about that guy ? What is he all about ? I swear every time he opens his mouth something about him makes me want to punch him. He’s just so… cocky!!?

14 Peter November 22, 2014 at 12:29 pm

I was at the show on Thursday too, had a Strokes tan hoodie on with a solid beard going. The show was f’n awesome. Went in with no expectations and was blown away. I wasn’t even paying attention to Julian, it was the other guys in the band who blew me away. I took 3 of my buddies who only know The Strokes and Julian because of me. They hadn’t heard any of his new stuff and said to me that for going into a show without hearing of the songs they were blown away. I replied with “I told you fuckers, just wait till it’s all Strokes songs and you know them all, it’s going to be insane”.

I’m telling you, what the strokes are doing right now by taking a break from The Strokes and doing solo stuff is the perfect thing to do. If/when they go on tour the atmosphere is going to be ballistic, their shows will have so much energy and excitement. Kings of Leon should take notes, I loved KOL and still do but they’re putting an album out once a year and touring non-stop. It’s watering down their music for me. This is my personal opinion. They’re still awesome and I love them.

I actually saw KOL open for TS in 2003 at The Aragon Ballroom, they blew me away. 2 of the top 3 bands of the 00’s in one show.

15 Dillon November 22, 2014 at 1:18 pm

@alan

I mean I think Alberts drug problem was one of the main issues, and honestly I think Julian is a big part of the weird vibe. He just isn’t as into the music anymore – the whole angles era he was phoning it in and it sounds like the media blackout and lack of touring was definitely his idea so he could work on voidz stuff and cult.

I think he has disassociated himself emotionally. I agree nick is kinda douchey but Julisn is 100% still the spiritual leader of the strokes and it’s not his top priority. Whic ok whatever fine with me it’s never gonna be like it was, and as I’ve said I loved Comedown machine – big improvement over Angles IMO.

But he has to know how much the strokes mean to their fans and how much we miss them as a gang ( or at the very least a functional band) So it’s just really lame for him to say asshole stuff like that. And this is from someone who very much enjoys tyranny

16 Alan November 22, 2014 at 1:51 pm

@Dillon good points, I agree. He shouldn’t be saying asshole stuff like he did. Wasn’t also a lot of resentment from Angles era coming from bad mouthing band members in interviews ? He better watch his mouth.

I think what also happened is that when the other guys started writing songs, they realised (I hope they did) that Julian made it look so easy for the first 3 albums, but actually not everyone can do it like he does. So maybe they understand that they need him to be able to give his 100% back into the band, or we’ll just end up with another Angles.

Comedown Machine is tremendously better than Angles, but it still hasn’t got “it”. Nearly all the songs are palm muted, a lot of fillers, and no sound creativity whatsoever (guitar tones etc). It’s just they plugged their guitars straight into the soundboard.

Anyway, I hope Julian can manage to swing back and forth between Voidz and Strokes…

17 JP November 22, 2014 at 2:27 pm

I honestly think this is just nme taking things out of context again. I think he said that ironically.

18 Conrad November 22, 2014 at 4:29 pm

you will all see, March 2015 – The Strokes VI !

19 lettuce-face November 22, 2014 at 4:37 pm

@JP
Totally agree.

20 Dillon November 22, 2014 at 4:54 pm

@conrad

Sorry but no fucking way it will be that soon . I doubt it will be next year unless it’s fall/winter, earliest I would expect new strokes would be 2016

21 Dillon November 22, 2014 at 4:55 pm

Also the quote we were talking about was not in the NME interview so I dunno how it could be them taking things out of context

22 Stevespoon November 22, 2014 at 8:19 pm

I always thought Nick was the one that was pissed off everyone was doing solo stuff? He was the only one who didn’t when he clearly had some tunes at hand like Taken For A Fool and Machu Picchu.

23 beet on the rat November 23, 2014 at 2:34 am

can anyone hear what they’re fighting about at the start of this interview?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bX3KbTees4E

24 TheEndsEnd November 23, 2014 at 4:12 am

Julian doesn’t mean some stuff nearly half as seriously as you guys take it.

25 Tannk November 23, 2014 at 5:30 pm

Acura is using “I wish it was christmas today” for their car commercial. At least we know the money is going to a good place i funding Cult!

26 Ize November 23, 2014 at 7:22 pm

@beet on the rat they were just arguing about who should speak in the interview… nikolai wanted julian to do the whole talking for the interview but julian said they should all talk as a team

27 Annie 1251 November 24, 2014 at 5:26 am

@JP is absolutely right-
ffs I can’t beleive after all this time some of you can’t see when Julian is being sarcastic to an interviewer.
He was annoyed that they were not directly asking him about the Strokes.

Julian also just said in another interview that he and the Strokes met “non musically” for dinner in LA recently-and seemed positive about it. It sounds very much like he wants to record with TS
but
He had made it clear during the Chile video interview earlier this year (speaking of TS) that he couldn’t be around all that negativity – he “couldn’t be part of that”
Perhaps -since that time- the other guys decided to go to a more open minded route for the band so that Julian didnt just walk away?
He does honestly seem like he wants things to work – but he just again recently said he is hoping “the vibe will be good”
and mentioned not wanting to have to argue over little things- years ago he joked that they would argue over “what color car would take them to the airport” LOL

In the recent Huffington Post interview he said he stopped using his “digital recording device” because he “got lost with so many ideas”. He said he has “thousands of music files” that he still hasn’t looked through.
Along with a company to run and a family-I think this is a busy man that doesn’t want to waste time anymore on stupid bullshit.

28 Annie 1251 November 24, 2014 at 5:38 am

@Dillon & Alan
If you all really want to know all the stuff that happened and all the negative stuff that was said years ago – it’s all out there. But it’s kind of depressing so I dont recommend it.
and like Julian keeps saying – they have moved on from all that.

and fyi Julian kept his mouth shut for a long time when some not so nice things were said about him.
when he finally started speaking up for himself everyone was shocked. I remember the reactions on this site right here.

@Alan
you said so many times you wished Julian would talk about how he writes -and info about the songs.
what he said about HS in this KUCI interview is quite interesting.

29 GS November 24, 2014 at 8:01 am

@ Annie I’d like to know what went down between them. I’ve heard that NV wanted to do a solo record using the bands music…and of course the emperor JC ruling over the band with an iron fist. Would you let me know what went down? If you don’t want to start a huge debate, please email me, gabethegreat2@gmail.com. Thank you.

30 SteveSpoon November 24, 2014 at 8:17 am

Hey y’all, I have a super off-topic question. I want to get my friends the Voidz lighters for Christmas and I was wondering if anyone has opinions on ordering from the Cult website? I remember reading on here some pretty bad stories about them still not shipping items, so I’m guessing it’d be a safer bet just to grab them when I see Jules tomorrow?

31 Juan November 24, 2014 at 11:54 am

Hi SteveSpoon, I believe they only had issues with the pre orders. In my case, I ordered 3 lighters, 2 of them were “preorders” and took months to arrive, but the “regular order” lighter arrived really quick! Hope it helps!

32 Juan November 24, 2014 at 11:58 am

My only issue is that I only received pins/cards with the “regular order” lighter… but got none with the “pre ordered” lighters 🙁 , also in that “preorder” i added shirts, cds, and the cassete.. but not a single pin 🙁

33 tvu November 24, 2014 at 12:06 pm

^yeah i would just get them when you see julian. rough trade in brooklyn sells them too

34 Rich November 24, 2014 at 12:07 pm

@SteveSpoon Ordered a bunch of Cult things online. My advice: stay on top of them! I ordered one of the Voidz UNIF tees that sold out quickly and never received it. About 5 days after my order I still had not received shipping confirmation (and I live in NYC and was annoyed at the shipping costs anyway). After sending an email I had the shirt 3 days later. Same thing with the pre-order lighters. If you don’t get order/shipping confirmations, send an email!

35 SteveSpoon November 24, 2014 at 12:26 pm

Ah, thanks for the answers everyone! I’ll probably pick one up at the show.

36 Human Radness November 24, 2014 at 2:29 pm

Ordering from Cult is super unreliable. I ordered a shirt from them a few weeks ago and they sent me the wrong one. They said I could ship that one back and then they would send me the right one. I shipped it back to them over two weeks ago and still haven’t gotten my shirt or even any shipping confirmation for it. I’m starting to think I pretty much just threw 30 bucks down the drain.

37 Julu November 24, 2014 at 3:09 pm

Kinda ironic with all his “we want to do everything cheap, fuck all of those labels shitting on everyone” then his own fucking label shits on his fans by being terrible at controlling orders. While he sits there with his millions, the least he could do is to hire some people who can do their jobs. All these opinions he has are a little hard to take seriously, when stuff like this happens in his own backyard. btw. huge fan of the record

38 lettuce-face November 24, 2014 at 3:34 pm

@Julu
Jesus christ dude! This was probably the first time they had to move this much product. Its a small, young label. Theyre not being dicks on purpose. You’re ignorant to actual situation, you dont the machinations of Cult HQ. I’m so tired of hearing everyone speak with absolutely no understanding or empathy, just hyper-critical about everything. Its fucking depressing.

39 Ahora November 24, 2014 at 4:20 pm

This is about the dumbest thing that’s come out of Julian’s mouth. In the context of sentiment of his work being compared to the strokes :
“I’m not putting myself in this realm, but if you look at John Lennon and The Beatles, Lennon was my favourite. I don’t even really like the Beatles. I mean think about “Imagine,” it’s probably better than any Beatles song. Plus, all of Lennon’s solo stuff is amazing yet I think in his time he considered it all a failure and people were against it because of the sentimentality of The Beatles.” I strongly disagree.

40 Gibson November 24, 2014 at 5:20 pm

Regarding the show tomorrow at the Hammerstein, is there going to be a campout? And at what time would you guys recommend getting there. For general admission.

41 jp November 24, 2014 at 6:45 pm

If you want front row, be there all day. Otherwise, you can still get a pretty good spot even an hour before doors open.

42 Pat November 24, 2014 at 7:06 pm

New interview a friend of mine did with JC before their show in Toronto…..

Apart from Julian’s affinity for using ‘z’ instead of ‘s,’ The Voids band name was already taken by a punk band.
