Comedown Machine’s sales disappoint

Update: Apparently the Billboard link I listed below had the incorrect rankings. It turns out Comedown Machine was 10th in the United States, with 41,000 albums sold. That’s what several organizations are reporting, including the NYT. UPDATED

Without any promotion and a strong lead single, it was rather clear Comedown Machine wasn’t going to do as well as all four preceding Strokes records.

Now, a little more than a week after its release, that notion has held true. Comedown Machine debuted at eighth on the charts in the United States, selling 40,000 copies. For reference, Angles and First Impressions of Earth both debuted at No. 4 on the , according to the popular music service.

In the UK, Comedown Machine was the 10th-best selling record last week, according to the BBC. It was the week’s second-best debut record behind Depeche Mode’s Delta Machine.

It will be interesting to see how Comedown Machine does in the coming weeks, without any live dates on the horizon. This record will likely fade into oblivion by the beginning of summer.
