The Strokes arrived late and left early but, by all accounts, they sounded fantastic.

That’s nothing new, but what about The Strokes opening with Gratisfaction? I really like that choice, although NYCC is the ultimate Strokes opener.

Here are some videos from Saturday’s set. To see the non-Angles tracks (three are up right now), check out the TSN Facebook page.

Sunglasses are only cool at night.
They sound great as always, but I wish they had talked a little bit more with the crowd, though.

anyone else notice how much more content he is to sing “life is simple” than any other song on the angles setlist? the strokes aren’t gonna get any better sonically until they give julian more creative leeway.

Could the owned of this site stop sucking the Strokes’s balls ?

How can you honestly say they “sounded fantastic” ??? Have you watched the video of Taken for a fool ? It was absolutely terrible it sounded like Julian just wanted to walk off the stage and go home.

They sounded anything but fantastic. Very poor choice of words.

This site is cool and all, but you seriously need to be more objective…

This was my first strokes show and was simply awesome. They sounded great and the band was in great spirits. Laughing and joking with each other. Never realized how funny julian is. Natural talent. He went on a funny little speech about jazz, when nick was having tech issues with his guitar. It didn’t seem like they had a real setlist down, bc they would all “pow wow” around fab after each song. From the countless shows I’ve seen of them online, I wasn’t expecting julian to be so relaxed and open with the audience. With the show being during the day, it made the performance more honest and pure for me. No sunglasses to hide behind or light show. Maybe it was also bc I was smack dab in the front. I just wish the crowd was as amped as I was.

the crowd look s so sparse and unenthusiastic, but i agree with eric that they sounded fantastic.

Being that I live in Louisiana (yet missed the show), Julian was probably pissy because of all that leather and humidity we got here. Just saying….

7 KEVIN May 8, 2011 at 4:17 pm

Strange to see them play during the day.

8 good sport May 8, 2011 at 4:27 pm

Julian wasn’t pissy at all. From the stories by the press, it seems the strokes either hate each other or love each other. My fiance even commented about how they all seemed to be in good spirits with one another, cracking smiles and jokes between songs

alan, your an idiot. I’m all down for objectivity but your just being extreme. Of course it doesn’t sound good on video. IT’S A VIDEO. Obviously there is a great deal lost in translation. i’ve seen them a few times and they sounded up to par live. There was a lot of smiling and high fives between the band members so it’s safe to say no one “looked like they wanted to walk off the stage”. It was a thrilling experience……. plus my lil sisters boyfriend punched the dickhead that was inappropriately rubbing all over us behind us and split his lip open. Then I told him to go get his lip sewn up at the first aid tent.
that was fun too. the adrenaline was pumping

ps. the heat was BRUTAL

When Alan starts paying for the site and finding Strokes Information for us fans to enjoy, then he can complain….

They sound good, given the video medium….oh Julian, why did you throw your glasses into the audience at the last show?!? Lol, your eyes must kill in that bright sunlight! Lol

12 Eon May 8, 2011 at 8:01 pm

@Alan

They only sounded bad because it was recorded from a cellphone or a digicam. You had to have been there in order to really judge how they sounded like. I’ve been to many shows where a band sounded awesome on stage but when i got home and watched it on video they sound like shit.

13 Eric Van Dril May 8, 2011 at 8:26 pm

@alan — I’ve read at least 10 reviews of The Strokes’ show (fan and professional reviews) and they’ve all said the same thing. They sounded great. Read the comments on this post from the people that saw them.

You arguing that I’m not objective because of one cell phone video is idiotic and it says more about you than my objectivity.

….what’d Jules sang at the end of Life is simple? he changed the last lyric aite? …but I can’t catch what it is.

15 jpgs May 9, 2011 at 12:44 am

he might have said “keep falling in place”

16 Juice May 9, 2011 at 3:52 am

jpgs – yeah! That’s it. Thanks.

the last time i saw the strokes was last year at splendour in the grass.

there were 30,000 of us losing our minds because they just fucking rocked the shit
out of woodford.

this crowd is disappointing.

18 Tara May 9, 2011 at 8:10 am

I get that it must have been really hot and all, but I agree with lots of the comments above; seriously – how is the majority of crowd so underwhelming? I mean, the stage is so CLOSE and comparatively intimate for a festival gig, and yet… Anyway, props to the few people who are dancing and singing along.

I saw an alternate video of Gratisfaction on youtube and you could hear this one guy heckling them from somewhere. Which makes me wonder, why would you pay big bucks to go to a concert, work your way up towards the front of the stage, just so that you can rip into some band you don’t like?

20 KEVIN May 9, 2011 at 2:51 pm

Gratisfaction is a cool opener. I REALLY loved the FIOE tour when they were opening with Ize Of The World. That was awesome! I recorded one of those shows if anyone is interested. It’s from Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in Asheville, NC on 5-26-06. It came out pretty good!

21 Cindy May 9, 2011 at 5:54 pm

I was at the concert, and the crowd that you see in the videos is actually just the VIP section. There weren’t many people in the VIP part, and there was an awkward gap of about 15 feet of empty space before the rest of the crowd. Also, these videos were taken from the side of the crowd. I was in the front, just right of center stage, and we were going nuts. I’m actually surprised that you can’t hear screaming in these videos, because I know that I at least was screaming every second that Julian wasn’t singing or talking :) And they did sound much better live. I saw them at Coachella also, and I think that this set was better. I’m glad someone took video, because the festival isn’t releasing video of their set. Judging from the people around me, I think the crowd might have been a little too young to know all of their music. Most of the people I talked to were the same age now as I was when Is This It? came out…

22 Steph May 9, 2011 at 6:59 pm

All of us crazies that were at the front of the crowd (not the lame VIP section) were having a blast. Several of the VIPs were just watching us rather than watching The Strokes, and I saw several people filming us, too. I thought it was a great show. It was probably the best view I’ve ever had of them, plus it was so sunny…it was just a really different and great way to see them. I thought they sounded awesome. Julian remembered way more lyrics than he did at Sweetlife (from what I saw of the live stream). They didn’t play Games even though Albert’s Keyboards/synth were out, which really disappointed me. I was wearing one of my Strokes Tshirts, and after the festival (on the bus ride back to downtown) all the old people that were there to see Jimmy Buffet were asking me about The Strokes and saying “I heard they were great”. It was cute.

23 Rob May 9, 2011 at 8:01 pm

Eric, just wanna say how awesome this site is, you’ve done an amazing job!

But also, does anyone have any idea what Julian was singing at the end of UCOD? Something that ended in ‘all night long’.

24 thomass May 10, 2011 at 8:11 am

Julian even commented on how weird it is that festivals always seperate the real crowd from the band by putting in that shitty VIP section up front with all kinds of people who don’t even know the music. He seemed in high spirits actually

25 thomass May 10, 2011 at 8:28 am

@eric,
I have a solid picture of the band I captured during the show I wanted you to see. What’s your email address again?

26 Pete May 10, 2011 at 3:55 pm

@Rob Yeah I was wondering the exact same thing… it sounded awesome! Anyone have any ideas?

27 Pat May 10, 2011 at 4:16 pm

Hey Eric!

Have you ever thought of doing a music analysis of one Angles track?
Has anyone here done that? Or is it because there’s not much to analyze? haha.

28 Eric Van Dril May 11, 2011 at 8:04 am

@Pat — I’ve done those before and people haven’t been too excited, so i’m probably not going to do any for Angles. Sorry.

29 Pat May 11, 2011 at 8:52 am

It’s okay.

30 Chelsea May 13, 2011 at 1:21 am

Yeah, Julian joked about how the crowd was “too close” and asked if they could be moved back a little. This was the second time I’ve seen them and I enjoyed it although I wish they had played an encore…. we waited for around 20 minutes after the show because we were sure they would play one! other than that they were amazing!
