Any time now I’m going to get a life and stop posting BUT
I love Julian throwing down the glass (as Eric says, he’s so rock & roll) and then picking it right back up. I think there’s a little voice in his head that is constantly like, “why you gotta be such a jack ass?”
Another thing that was going on at this show was there was this awesome sign language interpreter. It was pretty dark, and then she had a pretty good spot light on her. She was totally rocking out the whole time. She was hilarious and distracting. At first I thought she was just a deranged fan dancing by the stage. She seemed to really know the songs, too. I don’t think I’ve ever seen interpretation for a concert before. Also kinda cool to see the songs in sign. Adds a whole new element.

@Becky: Hahahaa, I was thinking the exact same thing on the cup – at first when I saw him throw it down I was thinking oh God, he can be so lame (particularly considering he no longer has the excuse of being in a drunken rage) but then picking it up right after is just so funny. It all looked especially funny as the sound on my computer stopped working so I just had to marvel at Albert’s lovely dancing and Julian molesting the mic. I remember reading an interview somewhere with Julian where he was talking about how they sometimes felt like they had become these ridiculous rock star cliches and that he used to think he’d have to kick over a chair when he walked into a room!
That’s pretty cool about the interpreter – was she a fan in the crowd?
Anyone know what Julian says at the start? I really wish I was at these two gigs – from everything i’ve read, it sounds like these were their best two gigs of the summer (Venison aside!). Which did you prefer: Stubbs or ACL?

4 clare October 12, 2010 at 5:02 am

I finally feel like all the speculation on a rift within the band has been put to rest by these two concerts and news that they’re hanging out together after the shows – they’re clearly getting on great together and seem to be really happy and relaxed.

5 Kathy October 12, 2010 at 7:45 am

I wish I was there =(

Has anyone heard about the new Kings of Leon cd? Is anyone else as excited as me?!! I pre-ordered mine =) (http://amzn.to/9K0Dam in case anyone else wants to)

6 Michala October 12, 2010 at 9:42 am

I know they do the sign language thing at Lollapalooza, too.. it’s hilarious… especially for someone like Snoop Dogg..

7 Steph October 12, 2010 at 11:01 am

Yeah, they had sign language interpreters for all the shows i saw on this stage and they all seemed to know the music really well. They’re so into it, it’s awesome! I loved Julian’s little michael jackson moment before Between Love and Hate. Becky, it’s ok..I clearly have no life right now either and keep posting….reality does suck right now. It was difficult to go back to work Sunday. @Clare- I think I enjoyed ACL more than Stubbs, actually. Stubbs was waaay crazy, which was fun, and I definitely appreciated seeing them in such a small venue, but for me the sound was better at ACL and i was pretty excited to see the guys on that awesome stage (with the cool lights and such).

8 Ibrahim October 12, 2010 at 2:02 pm

@Kathy –> I listened to the entire album on Youtube! At first, only two or three songs grew on me, I was like “what the fuck?!! have they turned lounge or what??” especially when listening to Beach Side… But then I completely fell in love with it, especially The End, The Immortals (soo funky) and The Face (soo emotional!). They have a couple of songs that sound like Youth & Young Manhood too, Mary, Mi Amigo… I hope I didn’t spoil you too much :D

How I wish I were at those gigs… the waiting for the 4th album is just UNBEARABLE!

9 Speedy October 12, 2010 at 8:59 pm

am i the only dumbass that reloads the strokes real website every 5 minutes to see what theyre up to??? ugh i hate it. i want that new album so bad

10 Speedy October 12, 2010 at 10:17 pm

oh Eric!!! i have an idea about your website which i totally fell in love with.

how about you turn this into one of those eHarmony, match.com type websites but like…for Strokes fans…to make sure i end up getting married with someone with this very special mutual interest. I am fascinated with the idea.

11 Eric Van Dril October 12, 2010 at 10:48 pm

@Michala – They had them this year for The New Pornographers, but then they bailed for The Black Keys and The Strokes. I have no idea why.

@Kathy & Ibrahim – I disagree. I don’t want to influence anybody, though. So yeah, I disagree.

@Speedy – I love that idea. I might write a post about it in a bit.

12 Steph October 13, 2010 at 10:34 am

Finally listened to Come Around Sundown, and I’m just confused. There’s a few songs that I’m ok with but the rest just feels…lazy..or something. Maybe it’ll grow on me. I just miss their spastic, crazy energy.

13 Ibrahim October 13, 2010 at 11:13 am

Sure, this record is far less crazy and heavier, and I admit I miss the energy they had put in songs like King of the Rodeo or Charmer… but this is more emotional, the 3 songs I quoted above. It just needs 2 or 3 listenings to get used to it !

14 Becky October 13, 2010 at 11:41 am

@Speedy: Yes! I also love this idea. Not that I’m looking to date (unless Julian is ever on the market again), but oh how I would love to watch as others try. I mean, I’m a childless housewife, and my husband works 80-100 hours a week. The suburbs are boring. My current hobbies of listening to music all day and night, going to shows, writing dirty, filthy things to Julian’s twitter account (God, I hope whoever actually monitors that thing has a good sense of humor, otherwise, I’m going to get arrested.), writing strongly-worded emails to the DJs at my local station if I feel they aren’t playing Strokes/Julian/Albert songs enough (I’m a major contributor and their catalog is online…I can see what they have. They have no excuse!), and prescription drug abuse are getting old.

15 zmargi October 13, 2010 at 11:46 am

BOTH shows were K!CK@SS!!! Stubbs was CRAZY-I got a BROKEN toe, and was BRUISED UP; head to toe. The intimacy of the venue was SOOOOO nice, felt like “back in the day” when they FIRST came out. I drove 1100 miles just to see them at Stubb’s, and after ALL the drama, was still worth it. If that weren’t enough (it was), I actually met FaB at their hotel. Fab is SO laid-back, gracious, and affectionate. He told us a neat little story about him and Albert at a Weezer concert. He asked if we were going to ACL, BEFORE i can even say no, he went over to Ricahrd Priest and told him to put us on the list. We were PERSONAL vip guests of The STROKES!!!! Was the BEST nites of my life!!!!! And I have The STROKES to thank for it!!!!

16 jules October 13, 2010 at 12:35 pm

I’m curious. How much has the number of hits on this site go on up since The Strokes announced their summer festivals? What’s average number of visits a week? I just wanna know how many people are as ants-in-your-pants, can-barely-contain-themselves enthusiatic as I am that’s all.

17 Michala October 13, 2010 at 8:09 pm

haha @Speedy’s idea.. you should call it “Alone, then Together”

18 Speedy October 13, 2010 at 8:51 pm

omg i love that, seriously, i’m not kidding you about this idea! you know how hard it is to find a girl strokes fan (a real fan), who’s single??? ugh, i’m tired of everyone i know, of everyone i see…on the streets and on tv.

19 Becky October 14, 2010 at 1:34 am

@Speedy. You know what, I’m tired of everyone I know, too. I think we share a special ACL bond, and I think we should take our relationship to the next level & become Facebook friends. My name is Becky Lieber in Minneapolis. Other fans welcome too, ESPECIALLY STEPH…maybe you could peruse my profile and deem me worthy of looking at your Strokes pics ( if you have them on fb)?

21 blob bro October 14, 2010 at 12:59 pm

@zmargi

you are an unbelievably lucky duck, glad for you sounds like a once in a lifetime experience.

22 Siobhan October 14, 2010 at 2:08 pm

@zmargi: Sounds amazing!! And u deserved it after driving that far! What’s the story about Fab and Albert at a Weezer concert?? They seem to have a strange bond with that band. (Side question: are Weezer huge in America? Aside from one or two singles, they’ve only made a small mark on the scene in Europe, or at least as far as I know). Thanks to all you guys for sharing about the concerts and Strokes encounters – I ALMOST feel like I was there myself. @Speedy: I think this is a great idea – any day now i should probably start looking for a husband and i’d love to have some Strokes fan friends! @Becky: you sound like the best delinquent housewife around!!

23 Steph October 14, 2010 at 3:35 pm

Continuation of Speedy’s idea and Becky’s suggestion- Eric, you should create a Facebook group! Speedy and Becky, you guys are hilarious. And the “Alone, then Together” title is very clever.

24 Becky October 14, 2010 at 4:59 pm

I’ve been thinking (always bad) and…
DID STUBBS ACTUALLY KINDA SUCK?
I was telling some of my crusty c-sider friends at GBV the other night (a great place to find such people) about the Stubbs show. Like how crazy it was, the 2 hour wait, the short set…I even talked to a guy in Austin who said Stubbs management was arguing with Strokes management about the # of necessary fire escapes…anyway, my music friends said, “Oh, sounds exactly like the kind of shit the Strokes were pulling when we used to see them in 2001. They have always been so shitty to their fans.” When I started insisting that this was a kinder, gentler Strokes, I got laughed at.
I know a lot of people were very pissed after Stubbs. Demanding refunds and stuff.
Did I have a unique experience or get caught up in hype? Are these guys back to their roots or just pulling the same bullshit they’ve been coasting by on for a decade?
I seriously don’t know, and I absolutely love that.
Yay Strokes? Play on players?

25 kathleen October 15, 2010 at 11:07 am

@Becky: really??? Was it kind of shit for others?? I noticed that Julian’s voice was a little ‘off’ for some of the songs but I kind of prefer it when he’s like that live and slightly more chilled out – because he always seems to be more fun and energetic when he’s less uptight about the gig… and gives a much better live performance. I like the garage/ slightly rough sound at gigs. and when they play around with the songs a bit. I don’t know if i’m making sense. I know from some of the early interviews with the band that they complained about some things they had to do as a band to get an audience that were really nothing compared to some of the things my friends who are in bands have done and things that i’ve read about other bands.. as in yes, they probably had an easy ascent and maybe didn’t realise how easy they had it. BUt, I really think that after each of them (bar Nick) has ventured off on solo tours and struggled to get their stuff out there that they’re way more appreciative of their fans now. I think especially Julian. And I remember seeing an interview with Fab in this tiny venue with a handful of people and he seemed genuinely excited that anyone had come at all. I don’t know what they were talking about with the fire escapes though… I noticed in reviews of their States gigs that quite a few complained about that they’d come on late but I’ve rarely been to a gig where the band hits the time at the scheduled time and I don’t care either – it’s all part of the fun and excitement – so long as it’s within reason!! I did once wait an hour and a half in the rain in Ireland, wearing a t-shirt, for a Rolling Stones gig which wasn’t too much fun. But, I should have known better. I do agree that the set should probably be a little longer but at the same time there’s something to be said for keeping a gig short and sweet. Having said all that, if the next album is a major let down I’m not sure how i’ll feel about the band!!

26 kathleen October 15, 2010 at 11:08 am

sorry, that was so long and rambling and incoherent!

27 Becky October 15, 2010 at 1:37 pm

I’m sorry I can’t focus on Kathleen’s comment because I just get pissed every time a probable Brit is on here because what are you doing on here when you could be watching The Inbetweeners? What I wouldn’t give!
Any time I feel sad, I just think of lines from that show, or, you know, the whole picturing Julian naked thing works, too.

28 Kathleen October 15, 2010 at 2:28 pm

Oooh Becky, Irish IRISH!! 800 years battling for freedom and we still get lumped together with them…. but yes, i do now live in London ;) and also watch The Inbetweeners sometimes! If i were you though i’d be tuning into the sexy beast that is Don Draper on Mad Men.

29 Speedy October 15, 2010 at 2:59 pm

omg i love love love mad men….catch the season finale this sunday :)))

30 Becky October 15, 2010 at 7:24 pm

@Kathleen I’m going to warn you that I’m high right now, so my globopolitical knowledge may not be at it’s best…Would English be right? No that’s worse, right? Yeah, I’m stupid, whatever. But your Don Draper comment is important because it made me remember something important! I’ve only seen John Hamm on SNL, and that reminded me that I meant to scream a lot for Boombox at the Strokes shows. I think that would have been funny.

31 FlickerONE October 17, 2010 at 11:35 pm

Saw them at lollapalooza, then at stubbs, then caught them at ACL. I live in Louisiana so it wasn’t a big deal to dry to Austin. All 3 shows were remarkable….. The people complaining about stubs are more than likely the deuche nozzles that feel inclined to ALWAYs find something to bitch about. We were about 8 people from the front railing at ACL and it was the greatest live show in have ever attended (I’ve seen a great deal of unbelievable bands).

Ps. Someone send me some Valium to quell my anxiety until march ’11

32 Speedy October 18, 2010 at 9:28 am

whats valium?
you mean videos?
well go to youtube n type in onenonlyspeedy n look at my strokes videos from acl

33 Molly October 18, 2010 at 11:30 am

I like that idea, creating a facebook group for TSN’s readers or somethign like that… I’d enjoy having some “virtual friends” who like The Strokes, as much as I do.

34 Eric Van Dril October 18, 2010 at 4:41 pm

If somebody want to create a Facebook group or be found via Facebook, I’m willing to do a post about it and link to it on Twitter. But I really don’t want to do a TheStrokesNews group because I don’t like the idea of Facebook both in relation to this website and my personal life. I just want to post news about The Strokes and leave it at that.

So let me know.

35 Eric Van Dril October 18, 2010 at 4:43 pm

@Becky — There’s no way they sounded like shit at Stubbs. Those video are the best I’ve seen since Isle of Wight.

36 Speedy October 18, 2010 at 6:11 pm

@eric
no not facebook eric… but a space on your website for single stroke fans like me called Alone, thenTogether…

\m/

37 Becky October 19, 2010 at 8:56 am

I’m an impatient woman…

ALONE, THEN TOGETHER NOW CREATED ON FB!

Remember, I am old and fairly computer illiterate, but I’ll take some time to fail at what makes me most happy.

38 nicole October 19, 2010 at 9:19 am

dude! Becky! I cannot find the group! Can you put a link on here for us??

39 Becky October 19, 2010 at 9:31 am

Um…

http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_163320073687970&ap=1

Did that work? God fucking dammit, I am old and stupid. There may be a few kinks to be worked out on my punk-rock, DIY idea.

Patience, please!

40 julie October 19, 2010 at 12:22 pm

ooooh nme lists Julian as number 54 in their list of ‘cool’ people this year.

41 julie October 19, 2010 at 12:23 pm

i’ve never liked nme anyway. bad journalism.

42 Becky October 22, 2010 at 12:02 am

Can anyone make out what Julian is saying in this clip in his banter before BL&H? I think he said, “and I see the girl I want to hook up with,” and then says something about maybe boobies?

43 christa October 23, 2010 at 9:52 pm

i just wanna say, i’v been a fan of those lovely new york boys for almost 10 years now…saw them in 2001 when i was 17…and i cant believe i just now found this site…nothing feels better than stumbling upon people who love your favourite band as much as you do…
