I can say, with a reasonable amount of certainty, that The Strokes’ fifth record will be called “Comedown Machine”.
Here’s why.
The following cached image was uncovered by Reddit user andersonenvy last night — thanks for the tip, Maya — and it seems as if The Strokes’ management/web designer briefly tested this image on the band’s website to ensure it works when the band’s fifth record is released. They then hid that page on the site, but andersonenvy was able to uncover it last night.
Anyway, here’s the photo that was uncovered…
A few readers have mentioned seeing this screen and briefly being directed to thestrokes.com/comedownmachine while trying to listen to One Way Trigger. This information seems to mean — please note that I haven’t confirmed this — that the band’s fifth record will be called Comedown Machine, it will be released on RCA and its run time will be 37 minutes, 49 seconds.
Considering all we know about The Strokes and that this image was found on The Strokes’ official site, that information makes complete sense.

Nice title, I hope that isn’t the cover though, that would be a bit boring.
The cover will probably in the style of the ‘One Way Trigger’ song. Atleast, that would be logical.
Great title.
37 min 49 sec? OWT is about 4 minutes, so either all the other songs are way shorter or we’re only getting 9 song…
If this is the album cover what with the ‘splice free guarantee’ ‘extra strength’ ‘proffessional standard’ and the giant RCA?
I love that title
Someone with high tweetcred should ask albert, he’ll have to admit
Very cool title. Also loved that One Way Trigger artwork, that would be great if the album cover was something along the same lines. Would make for a great looking vinyl.
@TheTourist
Short songs are nice. I feel like songs can be so long now and you just end up getting bored. The tracks on Is This It and Room on Fire all ran under 4 minutes. Same with Angles, with the exception of Life is Simple in the Moonlight.
@TheTourist — I highly doubt it’s the album art. I think this is just a promotional thing, maybe for radio stations or something like that.
@Carolyn — I think it will be 10 songs, like the last one. I know everybody thought FIOE was too long, and the others have been 10 or 11.
I’m pretty sure this is not the cover, just the title.
Hello guys
this is what the picture refers to…

@Mario — So do you think that means it’s called Comedown Machine? Or is it something entirely different?
Thanks @Mario, that clarifies that.
I’m hoping for more than 10 songs. If OWT is the longest song, it could be the “Barely Legal” of an ITI-length album with 11-12 songs around 2:30-3:30. I wouldn’t mind that at all. But I don’t know what to expect, they could easily do the even 10 like Angles again and have a bunch of 4 minute songs.
@tma I’m glad you’re tweeting Albert, you either have wonderful luck or he loves you. Let’s go with the latter.
@Eric
it all seems to point out but thats a first for The Strokes since all their albums have unique names.
Hugh Campbell seems to have beaten The Strokes for the album title using “Comedown Machine”
but who knows at this point.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Comedown-Machine/dp/B003UPEKNU
and by unique titles I mean titles not used in Album titles by other artists
(but may appear in literature)
@Mario Yeah, I saw that earlier and thought it was a little weird that there would be some overlap. Although, there have been albums called Angles, I’m sure. I don’t think it’s like band names where once an artist stakes its claim, that it’s off limits forever.
With that said, The Comedown Machine is technically different from Comedown Machine.
Is it possible that Comedown Machine is a working title? They’ve been known to use those.
@Maya — I don’t think so. I think the record’s coming out soon, considering they have a song out now and are releasing the first single in February.
@Eric, Album titles are a way for artists to get creative and give their album a name that fully represents their album in a few words. marketing, represention, the fact that thats what it will forever be called, and now, SEO (search engine optimization) all seem reasons why artists look for creative titles to their creations.
A band like the strokes certainly, without a doubt, puts great thought in their album titles even though Angles was used by a band before. Nonetheless their marketing and represention aspect of naming their album “ANGLES” was evident as seen in their promotional interviews.
Comedown Machine, if thats the album title, might refer to:
1. the new feel of the album (drum machines? new recording techniques? new instruments?
One Way Trigger (being the teaser song) certainly makes this album title appropiate.
2. Comedown= the after effects of drugs, like poor sleep, insomonia, etc. Certainly the hours and labor put in the record might influence the name of the title, as seen in “angles”.
3. The Strokes are just fucking with us with that title like Maya suggested.
People actually think that would be the cover lol ?
Anyway i’m excited and i’m hoping for good, something different to One Way Trigger that is
So OP delivered?… I still am in doubt until management or a band member confirms it.
@Matt
lol, yeah he pretty much delivered. At least he explained himself. And a bunch of people are tweeting Albert about it, so maybe he’ll confirm/deny soon.
Any way “Comedown Machine” can imply that this is their last album? Just a thought…
I can’t wait any longer guys.
I like it
NEW SONG! “Rollerbladin’ ”
Well, perhaps. Check Jules’ twitter!
Or is Julian just joking?
from the new LP… pic.twitter.com/cT5XX3zq
tweet from Julian
WTF Jules! Haha!
Zane Lowe is playing OWT right now
I’m guessing 10 songs
What is One Way Trigger is just a B Side?! That’d be great since it kind of sucks…
Look at the next post down, Zane Lowe plays ATT interview with the band!!!
@tma
He said after playing the song that he will interview one member of the band!
Come on, Rollerbladin’ is a joke
Remember this : http://oystermag.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/article-image-650×580/wp-archive/2011/03/fake_strokes.jpg
@Simon, That was so funny.
Looks like @andersonevy already tweeted Albert asking for confirmation.
@andersonenvy My bad.
I thought 107.7 was leaking out the song first?
Rollerbladin’? Oh Julian….
The RCA tape cover would actually be fucking cool lol
But it’ll be more similar to the OWT one. Still there is something about recording in the concept as the OWT cover has the name and the duration like in a sort of label.
I doubt the album cover will be similar to OWT. Thier singles, (I know OWT isn’t really a single) always feature very different artwork from the album’s artwork.
To continue the ‘rollerbladin’ theme, https://twitter.com/Casablancas_J/status/296434165908385792/photo/1
It’s gonna be a long 2 weeks… Atleast its everything is coming together after our long wait!
I can confirm this is what happened. I found the image totally by chance while looking through their website source code. I was actually just looking to see how they embedded their audio player but saw this and assumed it was a jackpot.
Lyrics guys.
http://www.juliancasablancas.com/news/
damn @Matt beat me to it. Was going to post the link too. OMGGG!!!
First off, I think Julian is attempting a rare joke with this whole Rollerblading thing but it’s kinda falling flat. Second, I love that lyric picture he posted. Third, while scrolling down that page I saw the Two Kinds of Happiness lyric sheet thing which I had never seen before. I had never actually read those lyrics before and now that I have I think that song has now made the jump to my favorite off of Angles (it probably already was before but now it definitely is).
