The Strokes don’t have any new music in the works

by Eric Van Dril · 42 comments posted a new Q&A with Albert. In it, the interviewer asks him — as most publications do nowadays — about the current state of The Strokes. Albert’s response is a disappointing one for fans of the band.

It’s been two years since Comedown Machine, do you know if the Strokes have anything in the works? Are you allowed to say?
Yeah, I am allowed to say—but we don’t. That’s about it.

RIP? At least we still have JC+the Voidz.

2 Why July 7, 2015 at 2:32 pm

This is the end, my only friend the end …

3 LeavingIt July 7, 2015 at 2:39 pm

He’s breaking the Code.

4 Ze Stroker July 7, 2015 at 2:44 pm

The Strokes are over.

At this is point they are just trying to squeeze as much money as possible out of the name “The Strokes”.

5 Miguel July 7, 2015 at 3:02 pm

Fuck this,I’m tired of Julian and Albert talking about The Strokes, i wanna hear the others

6 Miguel July 7, 2015 at 3:15 pm

@gS yeah and you also have summer moon and ahj…combine all that and you get a pile of shit comparing with the strokes (i mean they’re all alright but they will never come close to substitute my love for the strokes)

7 Amilene July 7, 2015 at 3:17 pm

Everyone needs to get some chill. You’re all reading way to much into everything they say.

8 gS July 7, 2015 at 3:31 pm

Miguel–JC + the voidz are brilliant my man. Brilliant.

9 Sean July 7, 2015 at 3:35 pm

everyone it’s ok the new tame impala album is AOTY

10 gS July 7, 2015 at 3:41 pm

Last song on is this it, take it or leave it. Last song on comedown Machine, call it fate, call it karma

11 Mcmlxv July 7, 2015 at 5:10 pm

New tame impala is tight as fuck

12 SteveSpoon July 7, 2015 at 7:44 pm

It’s only been two years since Comedown Machine and we’ve had a bunch of solo stuff since. Everyone needs to chill out. Ratatat took like 5 years to release a new album and their new shit is so tight. Give The Strokes some room to breath and if we’re lucky we’ll get some awesome stuff.

13 ElectricDinosaur July 7, 2015 at 9:13 pm

On the positive side, I feel like what this really means is we’re getting a new JC+VZ album in 2016.

14 80sCM July 7, 2015 at 11:32 pm

This is basically the same thing Albert said before. It’s obvious that they’re not actively working on anything, but I kind of want to hear what Julian has to say, because I feel like there’s more to it than just that. Oh well. It’s so true that they’re still doing cool things with their other projects, and just because they’re not doing anything as a band now doesn’t mean they’ll never record anther album again.

15 Ize July 8, 2015 at 1:09 am

This october The Strokes are playing at beach goth (takes place in southern california, for those who dont know)

16 Witch balls July 8, 2015 at 3:06 am

The Voidz suck so much. They are like a bunch of stoners who try to play Radiohead songs but end up sounding like a bad Nine Inch Nails cover band.

17 KILL ME NOW CUZ I'LL LET YOU DOWN July 8, 2015 at 3:52 am

The voidz, don’t suck they just come across as posers. Julians always going on about trying to hard, and he’s right, he looks like the bad boy from the breakfast club. Everything about him has declined, from his music to his style. Despite what the groupies say, those poor souls.

18 Miguel July 8, 2015 at 4:27 am

I didn’t want to start this hate i meant to say i like jcvz but they don’t come close to the strokes for me. I’m glad they released tyranny because we wouldn’t have human sadnes and many other great songs, but @gS first comment didn’t made sense to me, because the voidz don’t come close to fill the space if the strokes break up.

19 Sean July 8, 2015 at 7:19 am

Seriously tame impala album is album of the year everyone needs to get on that. Kevin Parker did once say Julian was his musical hero after all

20 Protogyl July 8, 2015 at 7:45 am

The way I view, what julian+the voidz is trying to do is creating a new kind of music genre similar to how he started the strokes ‘garage’ sound that inspired alot of new generation bands. But this time he has fail to do it by looking at the support. Their music style is just way too weird with the post-apocalyptic kind of fashion.

21 gS July 8, 2015 at 10:32 am

JC did say that Tyranny was his vision following ROF. I’m excited for new music, and even if The Strokes never record again, they are forever ingrained in music culture as leaders and innovators who stayed true to themselves and never lost their artistic integrity. They’ll simply be one of those bands that will play shows whenever they want and get paid millions to do it. That is a-ok! ACL I’m there!

22 Human Radness July 8, 2015 at 11:09 am

That new Tame Impala record was just okay for me. I think half the songs are great, the rest are forgettable for me.
As for The Strokes I’ve already given up on seeing them live forever ago because they won’t do non-festival shows, and the prospect of a new album from them doesn’t even excite me that much. Bring on Voidz 2!

23 AutomaticStop July 8, 2015 at 11:33 am

TS are recording next year. JC wants to finish up what he’s currently working on with Voidz (second album) and Albert is going to promote his new album. In early 2016 TS will begin to work on new material, they already have some ideas, but actual recording will be later in 2016, with a release in early or mid-2017. We will get a Voidz record in early 2016. Book it.

24 Wes July 8, 2015 at 12:15 pm

@Ize says who? How come JC + the Voidz are on the beach goth bill, but the date isn’t posted on his official website?

25 SteveSpoon July 8, 2015 at 1:43 pm

That Beach Goth lineup is dope. They have one spot that’s just question marks… The right amount for The Strokes, but there’s no way they’d be billed under Grimes and The Growlers. Could also be Mac Demarco.

26 Wes July 8, 2015 at 3:53 pm

BUT Albert is playing at the same location a week earlier, and Nick does live in LA…

27 Wes July 8, 2015 at 3:56 pm

Mac is playing 7 hours north of the observatory 3 days after that jc show… I think annie should spam albert or nikolai’s twitter until they respond.

28 SteveSpoon July 8, 2015 at 4:19 pm

But why would the billing be like that? The Strokes are easily bigger than all of those acts. I thought the same about The Strokes playing Boston Calling (Albert is in Boston a week before and The Strokes are playing DC the same weekend) but it didn’t happen.

29 Melodica03 July 8, 2015 at 5:51 pm

Well the growlers are the headliner because they are presenting the Beach Goth show. So it’s theirs to headline.

30 SteveSpoon July 8, 2015 at 5:57 pm

Yeah, I know that, but Grimes and Die Antword over The Strokes wouldn’t happen in any universe. Not trying to be a downer, but that’s some weird ass billing if they play.

31 Ize July 9, 2015 at 1:03 am

They probably didn’t want to put the question marks up top with a big font because then it’ll be to obvious. And yes the growlers will always headline beach goth no matter what lol.

If it does end up being the strokes then it’ll have to be them playing the first day (Oct 24) because Albert will play in Seattle on the last day of beach goth (Oct 25)

32 Wes July 9, 2015 at 6:37 pm

Yea… It’s not the strokes.

33 Lamar Condöm July 9, 2015 at 8:41 pm

They should just announce the break up already. 6 solid albums is a good run. Bummed they haven’t got anything new but, I’d rather they announce a break up than keep up on the fishing line any longer.

34 Ize July 9, 2015 at 8:53 pm

Yeah most likely Mac Demarco. And I dont understand why people want the strokes to break up, I dont see a reason for a break up to be honest.

Albert is just being honest and just because they are not making music together does not mean they will never do it again.

35 ugh July 12, 2015 at 5:08 pm

The voidz sound is completely awful, JC obviously wanted to pick a band that was on point with his vocals. This ship has sailed, give me a band who’s actually improved after a decade of degenerating work I even highly doubt they could attempt to create a song that sounds like back then, if they could then they would. meh

36 Ize July 12, 2015 at 9:21 pm

@ugh Same old man. You do know that people change music styles over time especially after 15 years? And they have been improving comedown machine was awesome and it sounds perfect in my opinion. The strokes have changed and grew over time and that is normal and healthy for a band.

37 ugh July 13, 2015 at 10:24 pm

@iz It’s also healthy for a band to make new sounding music that sounds good. I don’t know if you know anything about production or life or anything, but the last albums were badly made? It’s nice that you’re going against the grain by saying their music is perfect, because I don’t even feel that about every earlier song, but you’re blind loyalty is a little immature.

38 Miguel July 14, 2015 at 1:14 pm

@ugh who wants music to be perfect they’re a rock ‘n roll band, every record from them is great for me, and comedown machine it’s probably my favorite álbum after is this it

39 Miguel July 14, 2015 at 1:17 pm

And it’s not vlinding loyalty i showed their work to some of my friends and they all love angles and cm…some people just want them to be the classic strokes and can’t even enjoy what they have right now, move on

40 ugh July 14, 2015 at 6:54 pm

@miguel, try to put some thought into your posts, no one likes to read rambling consecutive messages. You liking CM is great (I’m all for that and your friends are cool for supporting you), but you don’t really understand evolution. The sales for TS went down ten folds after CM. This isn’t Bob Dylan going to electric, it’s a writer who tried to let the band write for themselves and failed.

41 Ize July 14, 2015 at 7:24 pm

Who gives a fuck about the sales of TS or how overrated/underrated the band is. In the end its just your opinions and if you do not enjoy their recent accomplishments then you can move on and ignore the strokes and their fans.

42 Miguel July 15, 2015 at 12:14 am

Of course the Strokes sales on CM decreased they didn’t promote the fucking album but like ize says who cares about the sales anyway…
