NME seemed rather lukewarm about ‘Comedown Machine’ on its first listen, but Q Magazine seems more upbeat.

Reader Very metal wrote the following last night. I’ll post the scans once they hit the Internet.

Four star review in the new Q. Can’t scan it as I’m on a iPad reading it. “The identity crisis is what makes the fifth album click. They sound like themselves but nothing like themselves at the same time.” They say Tap Out is “dreamy” and like Human League and also compare the chorus of Japan to Technotronic. “It’s an album of space and light, nothing rushed or boxed in. That approach is best captured in the mesmeric Slow Animals… Comedown is their best album since they hit perfection with their debut.”

Nice!! They call out tap out, 5050, all the time and slow animals as highlights. Anyway, thought I’d spread some cheer.

This morning, Very metal wrote this: “‘The Strokes: breaking up is hard to do, but it’s easy to listen to, page 102.’”

I’ll post the scans once they hit the Internet.

Thanks, Very metal!

@TP, Whaaaaaaa????

402 Tommy Pickles March 6, 2013 at 8:27 pm

@MA, haha I just think the one of the few reasons they wouldn’t want to tour Comedown Machine is to get out another album as fast as possible. I know they aren’t known for being prolific but I think Julian constantly has ideas for songs stored on that tape recorder of his. I mean, I can’t really think of any other reason for them not wanting to tour, other than wanting to be with their families or making another album as quick as they can.

403 the modern age March 6, 2013 at 8:28 pm

Wow I never would have thought of that! You might be on to something.

404 Joe March 6, 2013 at 8:42 pm

I think the giant rca above the band name is a giveaway. Theyre probably done with them for reasons unknown to me. I’ve had the strokes on my back burner with mbv’s mbv and Daft punk.

405 Joe March 6, 2013 at 8:46 pm

So I can wait.

406 Mikey March 6, 2013 at 9:13 pm

Well if the band is on good terms as Nikolai said in the interview than it really doesn’t make sense that the band wouldn’t tour. I mean if they toured during the Angles era than there is no reason besides family or hurry to record a follow up like Tommy said. Im feeling that we are gonna get a bunch of info by March 26th.

Upon listening to ^, I found another JC song I never knew existed; Long Island Blues. And it’s freakin beautiful. I have no idea how I never stumbled upon it, but I’m glad I did.

I love Long Island blues. One of my fav Jules solo tracks! Great lyrics also with a bluesy ITAO vibe

In regards to a leak: Most major labels now watermark advance CDs with individualized codes (sort of like a VIN on an automobile) so that if the album appears on the Internet, the illegal files can be traced back to their irresponsible source. Just like kev#398 was saying. Also a leak won’t hurt the band unless the album sucks. I think it it leaks before the 26th it will be an intentional leak.

@3rd Ave, Pretty sure it’s fake, it needs a password.

413 the modern age March 7, 2013 at 8:51 am

Thanks for posting those JC tunes! I love them and hadn’t listened for a while.

I agree with Mikey that we’re going to get a lot of info right around the record release. These bastards are making us all wait (I mean bastards endearingly, btw).

“There seemed to be a lot of young people in hats, with iPhones. They’re either all involved in some massive video game that they’re all hooked up to, or they’re just texting each other saying ‘where are you, what are you doing?’ And they’ve all got hats. Where did the hat come from? We’re going back to some Dickensian nightmare. I don’t understand it. People with hats and Blackberrys under the age of 30 should be shot. Or stoned to death.” – Noel Gallagher.

I want that on a t-shirt.

I’m leaking this album if it’s the last thing I do.

Bad news guys… Don’t have the link here but Amanda posted a link to an interview with Nick where he made it sound like they were not going to tour.. or do very little touring this time around. Can someone else get the link?

419 Eye McCoconut March 7, 2013 at 11:37 am

Im really hoping you guys are right about a subsequent album being released this year. This no touring thing suuucks..

420 Matt March 7, 2013 at 11:39 am

You guys predicted right, it seems. Minimal touring, new album sooner.

421 Next Dimension March 7, 2013 at 12:01 pm

I feel like they should have atleast let the fans know what to expect. This is the second album now and it’s been 7 years since the last tour. It’s tough to be obsessed with a band that does not care for there fans

422 Wolfsie March 7, 2013 at 12:09 pm

This sucks! I really hope they do a couple of shows at least but I think it’s really unlikely.

423 Sean March 7, 2013 at 12:10 pm

At least he directly stated there will be another album with a probable tour in the future. I’ll take that at this point. And he said minimal touring for Comedown Machine so that could mean a few shows here and there that might be in big cities so that a lot of people could see them. It could be much, much worse.

424 very metal March 7, 2013 at 12:13 pm

I’m not holding out any hope for a sixth album until they explain why they’re not touring. I just feel like he’s trying to to crush every fans heart in a fashion mag interview. I still think the Strokes existing past 2013 is 50/50.

425 very metal March 7, 2013 at 12:14 pm

er, he’s trying NOT to crush…

426 Wolfsie March 7, 2013 at 12:16 pm

@ Very metal
I agree- it sounded like he was trying to let us down gently :-(

427 Kev March 7, 2013 at 12:19 pm

@Matt – I believe you do but I’m talking about downloading a leak before my package arrives.

428 but julian i'm a little bit older than you March 7, 2013 at 12:23 pm

I guess we’ll never know if Julian can actually pull off that falsetto live…

hahaha. Just being dramatic….but really… how is anyone supposed to seriously be enthused about this album at this point?

Nothing says: “We’re fulfilling our contractual obligations” quite like what is going on now.

429 Next Dimension March 7, 2013 at 12:27 pm

@but julian i’m a little bit older than you
I agree 100%. It’s fine if you don’t like your label… let your fans know what is going on though. It is embarrassing/amature.

430 Tannk March 7, 2013 at 12:53 pm

Nick said they won’t be doing MUCH touring doesn’t mean none. I think it is very likely they will play a New York City show. I really hope they do. I think that the main reason why they dont want to have an extensive tour is Julians wants to be with his son, and of course nick and nikolai have kids also. I’ve seen them 7 times since 2003 and they always put on an amazing show. Can’t wait to hear the new music live. Although I highly doubt they will play One Way Trigger live.
The good news from that interview is that they are planning on releasing another album soon!
I’d take new strokes music over a tour anyday!

431 Anton March 7, 2013 at 12:57 pm

I agree very metal–would be really surprised if they put another album out.

Also, as far as leaks go–it is my opinion that 1) even with the utmost diligence, it is impossible to stop an album from leaking without a surprise release, and 2) we won’t get the leak until the album is distributed (shipped to record stores, radio outlets, small time reviewers etc.)–which will usually happen around a week before the album comes out. That’s when employees at record stores or at the university newspaper can get their hands on it (and it won’t have a watermark or anything else).

Angles is a great example of this–it leaked 5 days before its release, which was just a couple of days after the album was sent out in mass for distribution.

So my point is, I wouldn’t get my hopes up for a leak until that week before the 26th. But maybe, (hopefully) I’m wrong.

432 Dracula's Lunch March 7, 2013 at 12:57 pm

I’m surprised they’re planning on jumping into another album so soon. Can’t say that I’m not upset about the absence of a tour. I’ve never been able to see them.

433 but julian i'm a little bit older than you March 7, 2013 at 1:03 pm

@Dracula’s Lunch

I agree…I’ve been a fan of the band for years (9 or 10) and have never been able to see them. A little disappointed in the lack of proper tour news.

I feel like if I just replaced “New york” with “The Strokes” it would be an accurate depiction of how i’m feeling. hahahha

434 Thom March 7, 2013 at 1:51 pm

Damn. Dissapointed. Never seen them live, and since I live in Europe it doesn’t look like they’re doing an international tour.

Btw, does anyone know who is tweeting on the @cultrecords twitter account? Julian?

435 Wolfsie March 7, 2013 at 2:28 pm

Thom, it’s not Julian. It’s Richard Priest.

436 robo March 7, 2013 at 2:32 pm

Fred Macpherson ‏@fredmacpherson
Julian Casablancas just walked into the bar I’m in and ordered a drink next to me. Fuck. Shall I tell him how I feel about One Way Trigger?
LOL.I guess he decided to stay quiet otherwise he would have his glasses up his ass

437 Matt March 7, 2013 at 3:23 pm

I don’t understand why everyone is being so negative about this situation. They won’t do big tours for Comedown Machine, but they still will do some touring. They have lives and families, guys. They can’t just go running around the world willy-nilly. Eric’s explained that it could cause complications for them and their relationships with their families and each other. Just be happy that they WILL tour and they will release a new album that they will support with an even better tour.

Also, let me portray a drastic, extreme situation (that may also apply to Julian) for you guys to help you better understand:
Nick goes off touring for a few months.
Amanda grows upset, having to take care of the kids and run her show.
Nick doesn’t want any problems between them.
Nick decides the only way to keep the relationship is to leave the band.
No more strokes.

438 Matt March 7, 2013 at 3:23 pm

@Kev
Alright, thanks for clearing that up for me.

439 I Can't Win March 7, 2013 at 4:05 pm

@but julian I’m a little bit older than you:
I feel like you summed up my feelings when you said “how is anyone supposed to feel enthused about the album at this point”. The first two songs are two of the weakest they’ve ever released (in my opinion of course), they are doing absolutely nothing to promote the album or generate excitement, and now we’ve just received the news that they won’t even be touring to support the album. It seems like there is a complete lack of excitement on their end, so how are we supposed to stay enthused and optimistic?

440 Matt March 7, 2013 at 7:28 pm

Okay I give up.

441 Matt March 7, 2013 at 7:28 pm

I fucking give up.

442 something something March 7, 2013 at 8:36 pm

Would YOU tour what you’ve heard so far?

443 Lou Reed March 8, 2013 at 12:30 pm

@Anton Angles leaked a month before release.

444 I Can't Win March 8, 2013 at 2:45 pm

I had no idea Lou Reed posts on here! Hi Lou!

445 Anton March 10, 2013 at 9:25 pm

@Lou Reed As far as I know it leaked march 12-13, 2011, and the album was released on the 18th or 19th. Even look when this site put it up. It was less than a week before the release. If i’m wrong, go ahead and show me–but I’m almost positive it didn’t leak a month before.
