Pre-order Jehnny Beth and Julian Casablancas’ new collaboration

by Eric Van Dril · 34 comments

ArticleSharedImage-58742As was mentioned earlier this year, Julian has collaborated with Savages’ Jehnny Beth. The results of that collaboration will soon be here, as ‘Boy / Girl’ is now available for pre-order.

The project is a cover of Sort Sol’s “Boy-Girl.” The following is via

The collaboration stems from the pair’s mutual admiration after meeting while on tour in South America, and having an interest in finding a way to work together. The idea to collaborate became to take shape when Johnny Hostile (Savages producer) suggested the song to Jehnny. “It really made sense when I heard it for the first time. It was the perfect song for Julian and I” says Jehnny who recorded the bulk of the song with Johnny Hostile in Paris, before it was handed to Julian to perfect.

Casablancas notes: “I had never heard the song before and still have no idea what the hell the words are talking about. It sounds like a Danish dude trying sound like he’s saying English sounding words”. The video, that pays tribute to the original version released in the 80’s, was directed by long time visual collaborator and Cult Records’ creative director, Warren Fu. Shots of Jehnny Beth were filmed in London by Giorgio Testi. Pop Noire is an independent record label based in Paris, established in September 2011 by duo of artists, Johnny Hostile and Jehnny Beth, along with French director and graphic designer, Antoine Carlier.

(thank you to Annie for the tip)

no, it doesn’t work like that when you’re old and have a baby and you’re professional.

10 I'm here ya G-my November 29, 2015 at 2:12 pm

Sorry for the self-promotion but as a cyber Monday sort of thing I have a deal where if you download my free EP this week only, I’ll PayPal you a penny + get you free admission to a tour I’m doing next year. A lot of my songs are Strokes-inspired so I hope some of you would enjoy that!

doesnt this remind you of M.A.D?

13 LillySu December 1, 2015 at 5:20 am

I don’t see much resemblance. Not really. Yes, both are really fast, but M.A.D. is much more complex and is just “dressed” in punk, if you know what I mean. I always thought that M.A.D. has almost a classical piece structure.

just the intro, reminded me slightly of mad, random i know.

“no, it doesn’t work like that when you’re old and have a baby and you’re professional.”

Yes, because being late 30s and married and having a child and being professional at something has ALWAYS stopped men from cheating with younger women. Always.

Julian grow up.

17 Meg December 2, 2015 at 12:26 pm

Clark what are you talking about? Your just blindly speculating. I’d be more worried about those Julian super fangirls then this person whose likely a lesbian-not that there’s anything wrong with that…

You know a Legowelt x Julian EP would be waaaaaay doper than this ‘Sausages’ woman.

19 Q.Bridges December 2, 2015 at 8:53 pm

hahahaha ‘Sausages”

hmmm that shit sounds rather dull, perhaps this is all a ruse??? hehe yes that it, a ruse!

22 RooneyClooney December 3, 2015 at 8:36 am

^^The remix sounds better

23 Mikey B December 3, 2015 at 9:29 am

I was just about to say that @RooneyClooney
Julian needs to realize that his vocals are his main attraction, he’s gotta stop with this muffled/deep in the mix so much sound that you can’t even tell what words he’s saying. The remix makes the vocals clearer and that in itself makes it so much better, in my opinion of course

24 ZoneSquad December 3, 2015 at 9:55 am

that doesnt sound like jules on either those trax has ne1 considered that maybe he doesnt sing on this?

25 AutomaticStop December 3, 2015 at 9:59 am

Sounds like JC to me. He’s always playing around with vocal effects and different sining styles a little too much. His natural voice is his best voice IMO, he shouldn’t be afraid to use it.

26 Conrad December 3, 2015 at 11:06 am

I have no idea why but my first thought was that it reminds iceage and this song:

27 ? December 3, 2015 at 12:19 pm

It’s the old version old version of the song

28 DDLV December 3, 2015 at 3:06 pm

This song sucks…..

I keep hearing “I wish it was christmas today” on mercedes commercials so hopefully Julian will be cashing that into cult and another voidz tour soon.

29 q December 3, 2015 at 3:38 pm

^This. You on it DDLV.

30 ivey December 3, 2015 at 4:16 pm

I heard Julian would make an appearance on the Bill Murray Christmas special on Netflix, but he’s not in any of the previews.

31 j December 3, 2015 at 4:25 pm

that would be sick. I think I spied Phoenix in the background of one shot on the trailer, so it’s def possible.

32 LeavingIt December 4, 2015 at 12:12 am

Okay, that’s weird. The first time I accessed that preview of “Boy/Girl”, there were two versions: the regular and the remix. Next I looked, the remix is gone. I even refreshed the page — no luck. But reloading the page brought both versions back. Anyway, I think they both sound like JC, and his voice doesn’t sound especially altered to me in either. I actually think the remix sounds like it has had more done to it than the other. (Like the bass has been taken out of his voice, if that’s even possible.) Listening to the clips back and forth, I’m liking the song more and more. (I think JC gets off on singing, “I’m a girl…”) 😀
