Julian Casablancas to possibly write music for ‘She’s Lost Control’

by Eric Van Dril · 45 comments

Filmmaker Anja Marquardt is trying to use this Kickstarter to raise $50,000 to produce a movie called “She’s Lost Control.”

Marquardt’s film — which is “about professional intimacy and the way we connect to other people” according to the kickstarter page — has raised $11,324 as of midnight on Oct. 25. Marquardt is looking to raise $50,000 in the next 15 days.

If Marquardt is able to raise the required $50,000, Julian Casablancas will help composer Simon Taufique score the film. Julian makes an appearance at 1:47 in the following videoย and says “I’m Julian, I’m one of Simon’s friends. Whatever he needs, I’ll do.”

Julian looks fantastic again!

I’ve replaying Julian’s part for awhile now.. I like his little hair thing he’s got going on. Kinda like his feathers, but on the other side. It doesn’t look like a mullet. Maybe his new touring look? I like it.

I’m Julian, and I’ll do whatever Simon.. says. *smug grin*

!!!! I have been watching this video since Tuesday night, but I was so thrilled to see Julian that I didn’t even pick up on that “Simon Says” reference he made. I was too busy being mesmerized!
Hahaha! Thanks for being observant!

@Matt & @William
I agree- He looks great! ๐Ÿ™‚

Someone commented yesterday “He’s got his HOT SWAGGAH back”
LOL but I think true!

Brought this Tweet over from the other thread-pretty funny!:

sโ˜ฏfia โ€@meamoJFC
โ€œwhatever you need, Iโ€™ll doโ€ is the new single from Julian Casablancas, which features whispering seductively and a beat of me fainting

I wish Simon would tell Julian that he “needs” him and The Strokes to finish album #5.

9 H October 25, 2012 at 10:05 am

Whoa Julian making an ‘official’ appearance, even for an indie film is kinda huge.

Whatcha bet he’s got his eyes shut behind those glasses? XD

I wonder what its gonna sound like. I was thinking its gonna sound like Phrazes, with that 80s electronic vibe going on. Well it also depends on how involved Julian is gonna be on the writing process for the movie score too.

12 Annie 1251 October 26, 2012 at 6:55 am

@Tommy Pickles
I have been wondering all that also. I suppose the movie writer will dictate what kind of “tone” she wants for the score? Which would keep our slightly eccentric songwriter a little grounded, lol.
Which might not be a bad thing for his first foray into the movie-score writing business. We know this is important to him – he always said he wanted to be a “modern day composer”.

And is Simon in charge with Julian just assisting? Or will they both co-write equally?
Of course, I really wish Julian was the only composer – just to hear what he would come up with (for a movie) on his own.
But maybe it would be good for him to get a little experience (co-writing), and then who knows where he could end up out in the world with that amazing writing talent of his. ๐Ÿ™‚

The sky’s not the limit and you’re never gonna guess what is………

15 LillySu October 27, 2012 at 5:31 am

I would like something with I’ll Try Anything Once vibe.

Seriously, what’s with the Romney add on this site now? Is there no way to escape this election crap?

17 juano October 31, 2012 at 10:07 am

They won’t make it. And to be honest, it doesn’t seems that we’d be missing a great movie, indeed.

18 Annie 1251 October 31, 2012 at 10:35 am

I was just going to try to find out if they are near their goal. I agree, the movie sounds a little meh. But I really wanted to hear what Julian could come up with for a movie score.
LillySu mentioned his beautiful song I’ll Try Anything Once for Sophia Coppola’s trailer. That was a perfect fit.
But I thought if this movie was more about the human psyche – Julian could take things a little more in his “weird” direction that he’s always talking about.

How difficult is it to raise $50,000? How do other Indie film makers do it? Can’t they find some wealthy famous people to back this? What’s the deal?

19 Annie 1251 October 31, 2012 at 11:03 am

Can’t find out how close they are yet – but I have a question about their “incentive”:

“The incentives become greater the more you pledge, right on up to becoming an associate producer, where youโ€™ll get to hang out with Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Oren Moverman and join the cast and crew for the official wrap party in NYC.”

*Are the music composers part of this “crew” that will be at this official wrap party? ๐Ÿ™‚ jw.

I have the same feeling. ๐Ÿ™

Oh well ๐Ÿ™ Hopefully we’ll get something new from him soon!

24 heather November 5, 2012 at 12:48 pm

Hi guys! Jules looks hot, ๐Ÿ™‚

He should have posted this on his twitter. It would have got a little more attention. All the retweets could have helped some.

Anyway, I can’t wait for the new music from the guys and I hope they are all ok. Sandy was pretty nasty to New York and I haven’t seen any of them tweet anything in awhile. :/

25 Annie 1251 November 5, 2012 at 2:16 pm

we have a pretty long thing running on the ke$ha thread (before this one) if you want to join in!
(a lot of people don’t know we’re there, lol)

26 Annie 1251 November 5, 2012 at 2:22 pm

and btw: you had a great idea – Julian really should have posted this on his Twitter!

27 heather November 5, 2012 at 8:06 pm

Thanks Annie!

28 Goodman November 6, 2012 at 7:03 am

Annie, that type of attitude glorifying julian is exactly what broke the Beatles up.
I mean it makes sense at first, Julian Casablancas/John Lennon being the best songwriters in their respective bands, when they go solo wouldn’t it be better? Obviously not. Noone has matched the Beatles once they broke up, not even the solo work of the Beatles themselves.

Julian needs to be in the Strokes for his music to be the best. Im sure that everyone can agree that Is this it / Room on fire are better than Phrazes. The whole power of julians songwriting is that he can weave the intensity of all the best rock and roll music with the melodic genius of a composer. Without his 4 best friends with similar minds to keep him level-headed help him from going off on a tangent, his work starts to become so “julianified” that it gains genius but loses the universal appeal that the band needs to keep changing the world.

29 the modern age November 6, 2012 at 7:24 am

@Goodman, I was thinking about that the other day. I wouldn’t say ITI and ROF are better than Phrazes, just different, but that’s just IMO. I can’t really compare them but I’m weird about that type of thing. I do agree with you about Julian’s “tangents”. I feel like he gets wrapped up in things and 1) takes longer, and 2) is all over the place with what he thinks is “good”. He said in that interview last November that he’s always writing music but only 5% of it is any good. I think that’s crap b/c he’s obviously a fantastic composer. You said “The whole power of julians songwriting is that he can weave the intensity of all the best rock and roll music with the melodic genius of a composer” and I agree 100%. Why throw all that out instead of doing something with it? What the hell is he doing? I picture him sulking in front of a keyboard for months on end. I loved Phrazes, but can he just stay on track from now on? He said he wants to go “weirder” but will that send him off the grid with fans forever? Probably some. I really think that’s a good part of why TS keep disappearing for so long- they have vastly different fundamental styles and opinions. Sorry if that sounds dumb- I just had that thought yesterday so it’s funny I read your post this morning. Do you think he’ll change that attitude? It’s probably what’s holding things up with TS. Last year while they were all saying they were ready to keep recording right away, Julian said he wanted to take time to “figure things out” so I wonder what he’s going to do. He’s so so SO good, but I just want to slap him and tell him to chill out a little.

30 LillySu November 6, 2012 at 12:48 pm

@Goodman & the modern age
Interesting discussion. I agree a little bit with both of you.

It’s true that Julian tends to go off on a tangent, to become “julianfied” (Goodman, you said it so nicely!) and to get lost in a bunch of ideas. It’s true that he needs someone with “cold head” to direct him and keep him on the ground. But, I’m affraid that guys are not so irreplaceable anymore.

First, I think that Phrazes was a big school for Julian and he learned from that expirience a lot. Second, I also think that, as much as Julian is in the clouds (real artists are usually that kind of people), he is aware of a need to have that universal appeal, or let’s say to be enough commercial. And I expect from him to be able to find someone who would complement him in that way. In fact, I think that he found that kind of person in Alex Carapetis, perheps in Danielle Haim, too.

Frankly, I expect more from his next solo project then from The Strokes next album. And I would be happy to be wrong and Stroko V become masterpiece. But for that, it would be necessary for guys to be tight, to make magic together, and by the way they act lately, I don’t see it comming. If we could just see some photos with all of them (insluding Julian!) in studio, goofing arround with each other, some proof that Nick & Julian are good, I would think differently.

31 the modern age November 6, 2012 at 1:02 pm

@LillySu, You make good points. Also, I completely agree with your last paragraph. From Julian’s interview in Brazil last November it sounded like he had his mind on both projects.

32 Annie 1251 November 6, 2012 at 8:19 pm

@Goodman, modern age & LillySu
Well I think y’all know I like an in-depth Julian discussion more than breathing, lol! the man is just such an interesting character.

Although I think Julian would like to take his next solo album “way out there” and make it “julianified”-I love that! ๐Ÿ™‚ I think he is smart enough to know he might lose too many fans if he goes too “weird”. Remember when he said that making music is 50/50? He said “It has to be half for yourself and half for your fans. Otherwise why even take your music out and perform it for others?”

I love ITI and RoF. And I understand not everyone here loves Phrazes (this is a Strokes forum after all, not just a JC forum!). But I DO love Phrazes. IMO it is a complex and beautiful album, and I am honestly looking forward to see what else Julian will put out.

And I understand what you meant by “the universal appeal that the band needs to keep changing the world.” when the Strokes are united they are like a special musical force. No other band is like them. And they did change the musical landscape, really.

But I think Julian Casablancas has given enough of himself to try and change the world – don’t you? He gave everything he had. (even he says he gave his blood, sweat and tears to the Strokes)- all while dealing with crushing stress and alcoholism -and yet somehow during all that insanity, he managed to write some of the most amazing music ever recorded.
I think Julian will always contribute great music to the world. But I think he has earned the right to make any kind of music he wants now.

33 Annie 1251 November 6, 2012 at 8:22 pm

@modern age
Yes, we all agree that Julian goes off on “tangents” (Goodman describes him well, lol!). But I think instead of just sulking in front of his keyboard (hahaha!) Lillysu was right that his head is in the clouds and you were right -that he is all over the place in what he thinks is good.

I don’t know if that is his lack of confidence (I think the whole Phrazes experience should have somewhat boosted his confidence in his abilities). Or if it is his A-type personality. I said on the other thread he reminds me of my gifted friend – always creating (ALWAYS!) and never feeling like a project is “done”. It’s really hard for gifted people to “wrap things up” – there is always more to do – a tweak here, a fix there. And it drives them crazy. and they drive us crazy! But oh- the amazing things that can come from these special, infuriating people!

I think I understand why Julian wants time to “figure things out”. He doesn’t know exactly what to do with this situation with the band. He still loves these guys (most of them!) but I think it’s got to be painful for him to do all this collaboration. It must be like nails on a chalkboard for him.

34 Annie 1251 November 6, 2012 at 8:40 pm

I agree with every thing you said. I also found comfort in your idea that Alex and possibly Danielle could “compliment” Julian, with his working style. He does need someone to keep him grounded or he will be all over the place. And the Sick Six was amazing live.
And yes – he does understand that he can’t go too far out there (with weirdness). But I think he’d like too, lol!

I just hope his confidence is up now (after Phrazes) and maybe he will really start trusting his own instincts a little more. Modern Age really hit on something when she spoke of him only liking 5% of his own stuff. That must be why so much stuff doesn’t get recorded.

And they said James Brown was the Hardest Working Man in Show Business, LOL!

36 LillySu November 7, 2012 at 12:43 am

Frankly, I fantasize about installing some Strokes music chip in my head, not to bother with mp3 player on my phone, but this is not bad solution neither…

37 LillySu November 7, 2012 at 12:48 am

@Annie 1251
All 2012’s JC in one place…

38 Annie 1251 November 7, 2012 at 6:04 am

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ I loved that Good Morning laugh post!
But you know, I am so gullible, my first thought was “What’s this? I didn’t know Julian had a tattoo on his pelvic bone! Naked??!! What??!!!!”
And then I started to get that it was a joke, lol.
Holy Cow, you would have thought my first thing to worry about (if it HAD BEEN true) would be that he slept with Courtney Love (god forbid!) and not about a mystery tattoo, hahaha! ๐Ÿ™‚

39 Annie 1251 November 7, 2012 at 8:21 pm

JC photos for you!:

Remember I was just asking you when we thought he started with the taking the jacket half-off:
so – the 2006 concerts? btw: that’s as close as we’re ever going to get for Julian to flash us, lol

I like this.

this is not new, but I liked this comment so much (& the photo):
“He is the definition of a sexy rock star”

I will never get tired of this jacket”

40 LillySu November 8, 2012 at 2:27 am

@Annie 1251
All photos are perfect. In-freaking-tense one is extra perfect, if that is possible. ๐Ÿ™‚
