I’ve written to Cult twice now about having received the wrong copy. No response. (Sounds like the title of a Strokes tune.)

2 WHATTHEFUCKWHASTHAT June 15, 2016 at 11:57 am

More EP’s coming, this I know

3 mother goose June 15, 2016 at 12:09 pm

How do you know there are more coming?

4 LeavingIt June 15, 2016 at 7:24 pm

The problem with EPs is that they’re expensive in the long run. Three songs for $15, versus 12-16 on an LP for $17-20. I certainly hope that’s not the non-digital music of the future.

Here’s a real high quality audio recording from the entire Capitol show

So I got my Vinyl, I ordered it 1 hour after they released it. It’s all black, no colors at all…anyone else get that? Or am I the only one? It’s literally a regular vinyl black record and in the middle it’s light blue & white. I see some where it’s all orange or all yellow. Did I get hosed or what?

10 LeavingIt June 21, 2016 at 9:37 pm

@El Pedro
Where did you order yours from, and what color did you order? When you say in the middle it’s light blue and white… is that actually the vinyl colors? Or the label?

I ordered orange. I got green. After reading up on colored vinyl, I’m sorry I didn’t go with my first choice and just get regular black.

To me, colored vinyl was something cheap kids records were made of, so I was hesitant about ordering a color. (I had no idea it was such a THING now!) There’s debate, but now I read that the general consensus is that colored vinyl doesn’t sound as good nor hold up as well as plain black. (You can get into all the nuances about the mastering, the production, etc., but generally speaking.)

There’s also the issue with how many pressings were done and where your copy fits. The first pressings are the best quality, and they gradually deteriorate in quality as more are made. One article I read said colored vinyl often costs more because it requires the machinery to be cleaned after each color. But I came across a company that makes colored vinyl records, and they said if you’re ordering more than one color, expect to get a mix on the first pressing(s) after a color change, because bits of the old color remain. So obviously they don’t bother to clean their machinery between colors. But I’m wondering if that’s what you got — maybe the first black copy after colored pressings. The weird thing is that they didn’t do white (as far as I know.) Maybe they started playing with the black. Personally, I think Cult is a little f-ed up.

Anyway, now that I know the colored ones are rot, I’m tempted to buy a black one. They never responded to my TWO queries on how I ended up with a green one and if anything could be done about it.

BTW, did anyone notice the EP is copyrighted by BMG Gold Songs? What does that mean? Is that the same BMG that used to have a music club? (You know, order 2 and get 1 free type thing.) They were great for picking up cheap CDs, but the quality of the CDs was really poor, and you didn’t necessarily get the lyrics books or whatever might have been inside. Same thing with the Columbia music club. Very cheaply produced vinyl records and jackets.

One last thing… FPP is already selling for mega bucks on the second-hand market:

Are you at all interested in selling your green vinyl? I will happily buy it!

13 El Pedro June 22, 2016 at 7:48 am

As of now I have the following Albums on Vinyl:

Is This It
Room On Fire
First Impressions of Earth
Comedown Machine
Future Past Present

I know there is the You Only Live Once vinyl single, The Modern Age vinyl single. What other ones are there? I want the whole god damn collection.

14 Miguel June 22, 2016 at 9:53 am

I think All the time and under cover of darkness also have vinyl singles. I actually found the single of UCOD it comes with a t shirt, gonna grab it soon

15 El Pedro June 22, 2016 at 10:06 am

Thanks bud…I mainly look on ebay, any other sites you guys go on?

16 El Pedro June 22, 2016 at 10:09 am

This is not a Strokes topic but a music topic. I’m a HUGE fan of The Lumineers and am going to say that they are the best band to come around in a very long time. I saw them live and all I have to say is wow. They are a one of kind band. Their newest album is perfect, their first album was perfect.

They are phenomenal story tellers, catchy songs and like I said above, their live performances are top notch.

I know many people may not like them because of “ho hey” and it being played “All The Time” (pun intended) but it’s their “Sex on Fire” or “Last Night”. They have so many great songs. If you don’t like them, give them a chance.

17 Oh. June 22, 2016 at 10:58 am

@ El Pedro

Use Discogs. There are a a ton of Strokes 7″.

18 Miguel June 22, 2016 at 1:01 pm

Yeah Discogs is great

19 Jahaba June 22, 2016 at 3:02 pm

Do you guys feel that fleeting feeling? It was exciting while it was happening, but it was only 3 (average) songs with no commitment to new music and touring.

Yes,there is mention of a press release where it states they are working on new music, but Julian was pretty coy and noncommital about it.

Everyone in the band except for Nick has a new record coming out. TS have no consistency. How will they grow and transform as a band and do it well?

20 Casanegras June 22, 2016 at 4:37 pm

It is what it is… Like you mentioned, they all have their own projects going on. So this LP is just one of their projects. It’s hard for some fans excepting that they are now just 5 artists writing songs together. Because for many of us The Strokes were more than just music… It was a live changing thing. Nevertheless they still find time to let the magic happen… And I think in a much more healthier way now than it was in the last years.
But… We’re never gonna feel again what we felt back than. But we can appreciate their music in a
new way. I love the new EP… My last favourite song is threat of joy ( past)… The first time I listened to it I thought it sounded like they’re joking about their own typical style a bit. It’s almost just to simple. Now the other songs grew more on me ( future and present) the new sound is great and so is the artwork surrounding it. Keep living the past Strokes… But maybe try living the present future Strokes too… ๐Ÿ™‚

21 AutomaticStop June 22, 2016 at 5:36 pm

JC tweeting about Voidz today. New music coming soon. For an LP, I think he’ll promote it more and not release it impromptu like The Strokes EP, but who knows.

22 LeavingIt June 22, 2016 at 8:16 pm

I might sell the green one. It depends on what ends up working out. I finally heard back from Cult about the mix up. They said, “Weโ€™re currently working on a solution to this fulfillment error. Rest assured weโ€™re working around the clock to fix these orders that got messed up.” They might want me to swap it out (but somehow I doubt it.) Curiously, that Discogs site I posted has mostly blue and yellow for sale, one red (for a crazy price). No orange or green.

@El Pedro
“Sex on Fire” is Kings of Leon! (An opening act made a funny comment at a concert back when that song was playing on heavy rotation. Not sure how it segued into what he was talking about — maybe it didn’t — but he said, “If your sex is on fire, you should probably have it looked at by a doctor.” ๐Ÿ˜€ )

Tomorrow is the second installment of Julian’s radio program. I think it has moved to an evening slot.

23 Oh. June 23, 2016 at 6:28 am

Well, if you do decide to sell the green one, please think of announcing it here first! I have all four of the other colors, and the green one is the only one I can’t get my hands on.

And where do you see that Julian’s radio show is airing today? It’s not listed here, in the schedule for XMU. I’d think, logically, that it would air today, based on when it aired last month, but it’s weird that it is missing from the schedule. I can’t find any information about when it’s supposed to air next…

24 gS June 23, 2016 at 7:17 am

The new EP is incredible. It’s much better than most new music. Drag Queen is phenomenal. The EP is 3/3.

25 Brian Wallace June 23, 2016 at 7:29 am

Personally, I think the whole colored vinyl thing is silly. But the band has to pay the bills….

So what was it?

Red-Cult/band website
Blue-indie record stores
Yellow-Newbury comics
Orange-Governor’s Ball

Someone answered this before but I saw a sealed copy in a record store. Is it the black vinyl one or the blue one? It’s weird there’s not even a sticker telling you what color the vinyl is. I can’t exactly open it in the store to check. That’s a dick move.

26 LeavingIt June 23, 2016 at 10:48 am

I will definitely put it up here first. (You should get a black one as well to really complete the set, or at least to be the one you play.)

Regarding the radio show, they said it was going to be a monthly program, so I marked it on my calendar (even though I don’t get Sirius). But I also remember hearing one announcer say that in the future it would be moved to its “regular time slot” I can’t remember what time that was going to be, but it was much later in the day — I think an evening or night program for the east coast. (I have trouble remembering exact times because they announce east coast times and I’m west coast, so I have to make the adjustment.) Weird it wouldn’t be on their schedule. Did you check the whole evening up to midnight?

Yes, you have the colors identified correctly. And yes, the whole colored vinyl thing is a gimmick, but a really popular one it turns out. Everyone is doing it. I read an interesting article where the author, after identifying the “cons” of colored vinyl, asked people to comment on why they do or don’t collect it. About a third said they like the visual aspect, especially if it ties into the whole album concept. (Like the Beatles White album in white vinyl. This is why I wanted the orange copy of FPP, for the association with GovBall.) They don’t see an album as “just the music”, but that it includes all the visual aspects as well. About a third said they don’t like the colored — they want the best sound and the general consensus seems to be that black is best for sound (even though black is also a color.) One known problem with “blocked” color is that you hear the division between the colors with every turn of the record. Also, it was unanimous that picture disks are terrible for sound.

There was one artist who “randomly inserted” colored vinyl, so no one knew what was inside the package. Seems not labeling the colors has been a problem for Cult — how are they going to “fix these orders that got messed up” if they don’t know what’s what? And with the mix-ups, it means that buying a SEALED copy second hand might not get you what you were sold.

You might be able to open the package in the store. If they have a shrink-wrap gizmo — and they probably do — they can reseal the package. Doesn’t hurt to ask. Just explain the issue. Or, ask if you can return it if it’s not what you wanted.

Re: Culture Void show
Culture Void is NOT in the Channel 35 schedule for today. If you go under the “Shows” tab for Channel 35, you’ll see Julian’s program listed. But unlike all the other programs they have listed, his is the only one without a date or time. Just says “monthly”. Classic.

I e-mailed them.

28 Mikey B June 23, 2016 at 11:23 am

I went on the cult website instantly day 1 and preordered the vinyl and got an orange one even though I was sure I was going to get the red (cults website showed that) so I don’t really know the deal with the colors to be honest.

29 A June 23, 2016 at 7:14 pm

My vinyl still hasn’t shipped and I ordered mine 1-2 hours after it was announced.

30 LeavingIt June 23, 2016 at 10:03 pm

You better send them a heads up. That’s not right.

I prefer the black vinyl as well (I play my records) but I was a little miffed that I waited in line for 2 hours at midnight at the Cult Store and didn’t get a colored vinyl. Also, the staff at the store only had size L left in the Starter jackets (and they run way big) and assured everyone that the jackets will not be available anywhere else in the future, that it was a pop-up shop exclusive. I buy the damn thing and of course, $150 later for a jacket that doesn’t fit, they announce they’ll be selling them online soon. I get that it’s cool that other people not in NYC will get to own one, but at least make it somewhat different. Why the hell did all of us wait outside for so long? Typical Strokes bullshit.

33 C Hidalgo June 24, 2016 at 1:53 pm

I pre-ordered a red from Cult about 15 minutes after it was announced for sale and received a black. It was also back ordered so I received it a few weeks after it was released. I contacted them telling them that when I ordered the red vinyl was still an option and they said it’s because the red sold out almost immediately and the image with the red record took a while to change to black. Shipping cost was ridiculous as well. Overall I was bummed. I could have just paid for the black version the day it came out from a record shop.

34 LeavingIt June 25, 2016 at 1:03 pm

@C Hidalgo
It took a while to change the image? (Said slowly in disbelief.) Okay, that’s just adding insult to injury. The black image was always up. What it should have taken was 10 minutes for some staff person to sit their butt down and put up a banner that says “SOLD OUT” under the image and disconnect the link to the red ordering page. The orange ordering page still makes it look as though you can order one — all the way through to putting in your credit card info it never says anything about being out — although there is a banner saying they’re manufacturing more due to high demand. One would assume that means you can place the order for the orange and you’ll get it, but it will be a while. We’ll just have to wait to see if they’re ordering more of the colors (I doubt it) or just black.

Everyone’s been saying the jackets run really big. Thinking about how Julian wears his clothes, that’s not such a surprise. (He’s already a big dude — where does he find things so oversized?) But then there’s Albert, who wears everything a size too small. (Seriously — how long before he just moves over to Spandex?)

It just seems like they haven’t hired very competent people to run the place. I wouldn’t put the blame on TS, but you can’t clear RG of the mess because he was managing it! (At least the store, anyway.)

I’m trying to remain amused by it all rather than annoyed. I finally took the EP out of the sleeve and it looks a lot better than I imagined. But still… Spotify? Who the hell cares about Spotify? The only colors that would have any meaning for me would be blue (supporting my local indie store), orange (for GovBall), and red (for Cult). But you have to ask yourself… in 5 years, will it matter?

35 Tannk June 26, 2016 at 8:13 am

@ElPedro There is a Hard To Explain single with a chair on the cover. NYCC live in Iceland is the other song on it.

36 dontstopreact June 26, 2016 at 7:48 pm

So I’ve seen a lot of people mention how the starter jackets are big for their sizes. I’m just wondering if anyone who actually got to try one on could let me know how it fit them. I see they’re supposed to be in the online store soon and I’d love one but I’d hate to order one and have it fit wrong and have to return it. Since I doubt Cult will provide any sort of size chart, I thought it would be better to just talk to someone who actually tried them on. Thanks in advanced if anyone can help!

37 Oh. June 27, 2016 at 6:02 am

The orange ones are still available. I ordered one a couple weeks after GovBall sent out the link, and it worked. I contacted someone at Cult first to verify that they really still had the orange ones, and she said yes. I got it in the mail and yup, it’s orange. People are just saying that they’re sold out on Ebay and Discogs, but the orange ones aren’t really sold out.

I tried one on. It was massive. Granted, I’m really, really small, and it was a size medium, but I was swimming in it. The arms were crazy long. I looked like Violet in Willy Wonka when she turns into a blueberry. The whole thing was ridiculous. But the coat itself is really gorgeous.

39 Ken June 27, 2016 at 12:55 pm

Anyone else still waiting on the EP vinyl pre-order from the Cult website? I pre-ordered about an hour after it went for sale and keep e-mailing them asking where it is but not getting any answers.

40 Joseph A June 27, 2016 at 1:13 pm

Warren Fu’s instagram account says it is the Threat of Joy video coming out

41 Hahaha June 27, 2016 at 3:27 pm

@ken Just randomly got my red one today. No email.

42 A June 27, 2016 at 3:54 pm

I emailed them and got a response last week saying mine should be shipping this week. But, then I got another email a few days ago saying the same ol’ “Your order is still back ordered blah blah blah,” so I still have no idea when I’m getting it. And I also ordered mine within an hour or two of it being available.

43 dontstopreact June 27, 2016 at 9:45 pm

@Oh. Thank you for the response! I’m a bit worried about looking weird in it myself, but it looks so good that I might just get it anyway. Just wondering, when you say really small, how small are you? Like, what size do you regularly wear for shirts and sweaters and such?

44 Oh. June 28, 2016 at 5:46 am

I’m a woman and I wear XS or S. There were some girls there wearing what I assume was a small, and they looked OK, and there were lots of guys who looked OK in larger sizes too. It’s not like everyone was walking around looking crazy, haha โ€” they definitely look really cool on lots of people. But if you’re super, super small, I’d warn you to be cautious because it’s definitely a VERY baggy look. Or at least I’d caution you not to get anything larger than the small.
