How Fab Moretti spent some of his time in Paris

The following video documents a drawing project Fab worked on with a French artist, who I believe is named Luz. It seems really cool. Check it out.

Did anyone notice that comment that mentioned them finishing one of Fab’s songs? Is this really true?

2 Choco July 20, 2012 at 7:42 pm

I would ask why they left out that awesome solo in Barely Legal lol. I have so many questions for them! πŸ˜€
And maybe their thoughts on In Transit.
I would love for them to watch In Transit together and do a commentary πŸ™‚ wouldn’t that be interesting!

What do you mean Fabs getting married?!

3 Choco July 20, 2012 at 8:09 pm

Have you guys heard of Wild Flag? It’s an all female band and the lead singer is Carrie Brownstein from that hilarious show Portlandia.They’re pretty good πŸ™‚

4 Dracula's Lunch July 20, 2012 at 9:57 pm

@Choco, nice. They remind me of Plumtree.

I’ve been loving this band πŸ˜›

5 LillySu July 20, 2012 at 11:20 pm

I liked Wild Flag, but in this video they did one unforgivable thing – they throw on the floor Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs! Why Arcade Fire? I love Arcade Fire!

6 LillySu July 20, 2012 at 11:22 pm

Who knows! Maybe.

7 Choco July 21, 2012 at 4:23 am

Oh snap I didn’t see that it was AF’s album! Maybe it was just there and they didn’t mean it. (hopefully) Oh if they threw down a Strokes album I would go nuts!
@Dracula’s Lunch
That song was beautiful πŸ™‚
I’ve been listening to a lot of Starfucker lately, they’re amazing!
Also, what’s your favorite Strokes song?

8 LillySu July 21, 2012 at 5:08 am

We had recently this discussion about what covers Strokes should do. Well, I have one… Boys Are Back In Town from Thin Lizzy. Those rainbow guitars are beautiful and Julian’s voice would fit perfectly.

9 Dracula's Lunch July 21, 2012 at 5:32 am

@Choco, I’m glad you like it! And Starfucker is awesome, I love Pop Song. I think my favorite by them is either Boy Toy or Rawnald Erickson Gregory The Second. If you like that kind of stuff, I think you might dig these. The first two are some of my favorite bands.

Favorites Strokes song? Well shit…I mean, I connect to every song by them but I guess the one’s which lyrics I connect to the most would be The End Has No End, Between Love and Hate, and Under Control. But right now my favorite is Someday. It’ll be different by next week though haha

@LillySu, they need to cover this for sure.

10 Dracula's Lunch July 21, 2012 at 5:39 am

I’m lol’ing at the Grey’s Anatomy thing…I didn’t even notice that when I linked it. I just want to make sure everyone knows I don’t watch that show haha

11 LillySu July 21, 2012 at 6:34 am

@Dracula’s Lunch
I like the idea Jules singing those words… And doing those moves… πŸ™‚

12 LillySu July 21, 2012 at 11:22 am

@Annie 1251
Let’s go back to that “Julian’s body hair” theme. I finally found that photo. Pay attention to his right leg, the part outside the jeans! Zoom if it’s not zoomed.
And this one defends his armpits.
I think we busted this filthy theory! πŸ˜€

13 Annie 1251 July 21, 2012 at 11:57 am

Here’s a cool drawing of my beloved 12:51:

Doesn’t Julian look like such a tortured soul here? (a possibly high tortured soul, but still, lol!)

I might like this GIF more than I really like the song:

A GIF of Julian imitating the Dandy Warhols in Rage (love that one):

Fab drew this!

Why do they always look like every photographer is the enemy, lol?

14 Annie 1251 July 21, 2012 at 12:06 pm

We were posting at the same time! πŸ™‚
Yes Detective LillySu – you are correct – I do see some body hair there! But – really – he’s not very furry at all for a guy – right? I am sure he does not shave his chest (I mean, really – we’re all lucky if he even washes his hair – likes he’s going to shave his chest, lol!) And your good picture the other day showing his chest tattoo showed no chest hair. And look at his arms (not arm pits) – his hair must be real light colored. Probably the Danish in him.

15 Annie 1251 July 21, 2012 at 12:30 pm

Favorite Strokes song (this week – I agree w/Dracula’s Lunch – it’s always changing!) is the live version of 12:51 from 2006:

12:51 -“‘I’LL BE RIGHT THERE!!!!!” – Total Goosebumps!!!

17 ImTellingYou July 21, 2012 at 1:22 pm

You’re all gunna like this band….

From London town, 4 piece, formed early this year, i predict big things for them…

SPLASHH: – All I Wanna Do – Lemonade – Need It

And my current favorite – – Washed Up

All songs are demo’s/early recordings!

Peace Out

18 Annie 1251 July 21, 2012 at 1:35 pm

Although I would love to see Fab get married and be happy – this other site says it’s not true:

**But -I don’t usually follow these kinds of gossip sites – who knows if it’s true or not?

Unfortunately – sometimes people “stop in” on this forum – say big things and then never back it up or come back here again.
I would love to hear about ANY new songs on the new album. But I think I’ve made that pretty clear this past week, lol!

19 Annie 1251 July 21, 2012 at 3:17 pm

A Tweet from Albert on July 17:

Albert Hammond, Jr. ‏@alberthammondjr
β€œ@MNK_Molinas: @alberthammondjr Things ain’t what they used to be.” No they ain’t. They’re better!

**That sounds positive! πŸ™‚
please please please please let him be talking about recording the new album!

20 heather July 21, 2012 at 3:46 pm

Is Julian still in LA?

21 Annie 1251 July 21, 2012 at 5:59 pm

I wish I knew! You know how all this uncertainty is making me crazy.

Did you see this last photo posted here? We think it might be somewhat new:

And I am thinking it looks more like NYC than LA. If it is NYC – that’s good for two reasons:
1) Julian should be in that freaking recording studio with them
2) He’s exercising (not AS important as reason #1 – but still good – lol!)

22 Annie 1251 July 21, 2012 at 6:01 pm

**It looks like he’s riding a bike

23 Choco July 21, 2012 at 8:55 pm

@Drac’s Lunch
Really happy to see Small Black in there πŸ™‚ And I love that Blonde Acid Cult song. Funny, I’ve had that GTA game for a while now and this is the first time I’ve heard that song.
Here’s a few songs you can listen to when you’re bored πŸ™‚
As for my favorite song this week, it would have to be a tie between Meet Me In The Bathroom and Modern Girls and Old Fashioned Men. I’m also digging that Someday Demo Eric posted.

I love those pics/gifs πŸ™‚ Especially those TFAF ones! The one with Julian using the mic as a bat gave me a good laugh. Also, Fab can really draw! & I love that he drew Julian, shows that Julian is really special to him <3

Random: I really can not wait until their new album comes out :)!! How long do you think it'll take?

24 Choco July 21, 2012 at 9:00 pm

Hey, if anyone is feeling down this video is guaranteed to brighten your day πŸ™‚
(Nikolai Broke The Zoom)
The narration always gets me. And Nick has a really good voice!

25 Dracula's Lunch July 21, 2012 at 9:21 pm

@Choco, I love Animal! It’s so awesome.
I’m always happy when Room On Fire gets some love, it’s my favorite Strokes record. I actually think Modern Girls and Old Fashioned Men should’ve been on the album. Barely anyone has heard it!

In terms of when we’ll get the new album, I’m thinking May/June of 2013 at the earliest and October/November at the latest. I remember Julian said they’re not supposed to put stuff out around Xmas because it would get swamped by shitty holiday albums by the big sellers and I definitely don’t think it will take them until 2014 to release it.

For real, they should’ve done a full studio recording and mixing of Nikolai Broke The Zoom and put it as a B-Side or an iTunes download. Imagine having Jules and Nick sing the chorus together…imagine him doing an Ize of The World style scream of “NIKOOOOLAAAII BROKE THE ZOOOOOOOMM!”

Do you like psychedelic music at all? Well, just let me know if you like this song.

26 LillySu July 21, 2012 at 10:08 pm

My favorite Strokes song for last few days is Between Love & Hate. I’m in heavy RoF phase now.
Also, I’m intensively listening N.E.R.D. ft. Santogold & Julian Casablancas – My Drive Thru. Love Julian’s part in that one.

27 Choco July 22, 2012 at 1:35 am

@Dracula’s Lunch
ROF is my favorite album as well. “Nikolai Broke the Zoom” is totally legit! I don’t care if no one gets the title lol. It sounded great and it would make a good gift for the hardcore fans like us (:
And I listened to the whole song I almost fell asleep – but that’s a good thing cause it really put me in a trance which I like.

For everyone – Nikolaiβ™₯Julian This really put a big smile on my face πŸ™‚
They really are close! Julian even chose Niko as his best man at his wedding!

28 Choco July 22, 2012 at 2:25 am
29 Dracula's Lunch July 22, 2012 at 3:37 am

@Choco, your favorite is ROF too?! Huzzah! You might be the first person I’ve met who agrees with me on that.
Yeah Oceans Burning is a very dreamy song, so I can see why that would happen haha. Actually, that entire album is very dreamy. I highly recommend it.

30 Annie 1251 July 22, 2012 at 5:22 am

About that Nikolia broke the zoom video – Is that Rich Priest narrating it? For some reason, I thought it was.
Yes – it seems here that Nick does have a nice voice – I always wondered why they didn’t want to try some harmonizing or something? I guess the “Strokes sound” is so tied to Julians vocals – high , low, raspy or smooth – I suppose that it is so much their signature sound – maybe they didn’t want to mess with it?

@Choco & @ Dracula’s Lunch
I met someone the other day whose absolute favorite album is ROF.
I also really like ROF. I always had this crazy thought – that Automatic Stop to me sounds like the guitar (solo) is supposed to be under water. I guess becomes he keeps singing about Fish in the Sea.
(actually it sound like he says Fesh….just sayin’).
Anyway – that whole album is so good. I love What Ever Happened – a song that not many people talk about. And I Can’t Win also. and Between Love and Hate is now one of my most favorites.

A powerful share, I simply given this onto a colleague who was doing a little bit analysis on this. And he in truth bought me breakfast because I discovered it for him.. smile. So let me reword that: Thnx for the treat! However yeah Thnkx for spending the time to debate this, I really feel strongly about it and love studying extra on this topic. If attainable, as you develop into expertise, would you thoughts updating your blog with extra particulars? It is extremely useful for me. Massive thumb up for this weblog post!

Hello admin good article significantly thanks adored this website really considerably

33 Scoflbopter July 25, 2012 at 9:19 am

Room on Fire has been my favorite Strokes record since 2003 (duh/when I first got into the band). Musically, i feel it’s a lot more interesting, but don’t believe it has the classic feel that ITI songs have. The songs are weirder, the band is stretching their structure and sounds, and I think it is fantastic.

My thought is that Julian probably had most of the songs on both albums sketched out, but chose to have the band learn/put the musically easier and more instantly gratifying songs on the first album before stretching into the weirder ideas on the ROF batch. This, I just realized, is why ‘When It Started’ is such an oddball (but still great!) song compared to NYCC.

It sucks that critics called it more of the same, and I think it’s just because the band didn’t make it bigger and more produced, which is something that most critics expect from any band’s new album. It’s also a bit more challenging to get into, but once they sink in they are hard to let go of.

Julian said that the two albums are like siblings and should be taken as one. Looking at it that way, I think what I said makes some sense. Take it or leave it πŸ™‚

34 LillySu July 25, 2012 at 10:36 am

I agree with you about RoF. Songs are really more complicated, in a good way, comparing to ITI songs. I’m a big FIoE fan, but these days I’m obsessed with RoF. I’m really enjoying Between Love And Hate, Meet Me In The Bathroom and What Ever Happened. I always loved Under Control, Reptilia, 12:51, The End Has No end, but these three I firstly mentioned are new revelation for me. I think that RoF songs have more soul. They are not so catchy, as they are mesmerizing.

And it’s so obvious how the band is evolving musically, from album to album. ITI was just simple, RoF went a little deeper, FIoE was so different and multilayered. Next for me was Julian’s Phrazes – so logical next step after FIoE. Angles slightly deviates from this line b/c it was first time cooperation, not so Julian. I’m dying to know what are they preparing now, how their brains are working. O, we need that Being Julian Casablancas movie. πŸ™‚

37 Tu Papi July 25, 2012 at 5:25 pm

IF the band was to release another single from Angles, which song would you pick and why? This would keep the band relevant before their next album, i’m kind of surprised they haven’t released another single, perhaps they cannot agree on one….?

I’ll go first…………

Machu Picchu – its loud, catchy, and has the intensity of a Strokes single. I personally would remaster Julian’s vocals to sound more in tune with his natural voice but nonetheless it is the baddest song on Angles that is not yet a single.

38 LillySu July 25, 2012 at 10:23 pm

@Tu Papi
My first choice is also Machu Picchu. It’s so catchy. But, I would also be happy with LISITM. It’s beautiful. And I don’t understand why they didn’t do that months ago. Of course, I don’t expect they’ll do it now. I feel like Angles, but also Julian’s Phrazes, were prematurely abandoned, having so much unused potential.

39 Scoflbopter July 26, 2012 at 7:31 am

@Tu Papi

I agree that Machu Picchu would make the most sense as a nevergonnahappeninamillionyears third single. Sadly, the vocals on that would have to stay the same unless the band recorded it in a lower key.

This leads to something I wanted to talk about earlier, which is that the problems with Julians higher vocals on Angles-as-a-whole is likely not his fault at all.

As a songwriter, you create something cool and then build upon it to make an eventual song. Along the way, it sometimes happens that the supercool chorus you come up with is out of your range. It can be unexpected based on the chords you start on, how you sing the verse, etc… When this happens, the easiest remedy is to lower the key of the song until the highest note you sing isn’t too much of a stretch anymore. This isn’t genius knowledge here, just something all songwriters eventually figure out. Julian, no doubt, figured this out 15 years ago. Here’s the problem:

ITI – Music and Words by J. Casablancas
ROF – Music and Words by J. Casablancas
FIOE – Music and Words by J. Casablancas
Phrazes – Music and Words by J. Casablancas
ANGLES – Music and Words by the Strokes forced to be a democracy for the first time with lots of input and creativity from all members.

The obvious conclusion is that Julian was likely too shy to make anybody change the key when they sent him songs to work on. He was forced to stretch himself over others work, thereby creating awkward high pitched vocal takes. I’m confident in this scenario because Julian has stretched himself all over the other records and his progress as a singer was obvious up until some awkward Angles takes.

Despite wishing some songs were lower pitched on Angles, I generally like what he does on the record. A few songs would have benefitted from being dropped a key tho. Namely UCoD, as somebody online slowed it down and it sounds fantastic, but too slow to be as catchy. The only way to get that for real would be for them to rerecord it. Technology exists to skip that process, but it’s not advanced enough to sound good yet.

So that’s a thought on that.
