More about The Strokes and VU after the jump.
Julian speaking glowingly about Reed and the Velvets is nothing new, but it’s the first time in Rolling Stone. In the following 2001 feature story in Juice Magazine, Julian recounts the time he saw Blow with Albert but then Lou Reed sat next to him and Julian, as the Lonely Island guys say, jizzed in his pants.
“Recently at the movies in New York, Lou Reed was there in the line and I was really freaked out that I was right next to him – Lou Reed! I couldn’t help myself, I just had to go, ‘Hey, I’m just a huge fan, and I know you get this all the time,’ and he didn’t look amused at all,” he offers. E ‘Just out of curiosity I said, ‘Have you ever heard of a band called The Strokes?’ – this was only about six months ago – and he just looked at me and said, ‘No,’ really grumpy and short.
“It was really crowded in the movie theatre, and I was with Albert,” he continues. “We just went right down the front and started watching the movie. After about five minutes, I turned my head and there’s Lou Reed sitting right next to me – in the seat next to me. I don’t think I paid a second’s attention to what happened on the screen. We were going to see Blow, that Johnny Depp film, and I don’t remember any of it.
“All I remember thinking for an hour and a half: ‘Man, that’s Lou Reed’”

I saw that someone said this is really old. I found it a few weeks ago and I thought it might’ve been old, though I didn’t see a date. Then I saw your post about it (or something that fit the same description) being in RS currently/soon. Either way it’s still a good read. I like when Julian has the time to think and write. I think all of his interviews should be conducted via email because he wouldn’t mumble or negate himself so much; he’d be able to focus on saying precisely what he wants. Then again, the mubling and negating is pretty damn charming.
Really cool- thanks for posting!
this is at least 5 years old
I hope you don’t mind a minor correction – it was actually Nick who met Lou Reed at the movie theatre, and Julian met him at Barnes&Noble, which he said in that horrible, Nardwuar interview. Thanks for posting 6 questions with Jules, that was really entertaining!
blow is like my favorite movie! yeah i think it was julian who met him at a barnes&noble, yeah Lou is everywhere…like…he’s in my heart right now…
