I was having trouble falling back asleep, so I went on Twitter and found some good news and some bad news about The Strokes’ forthcoming album.
The good news is that Comedown Machine, according to @themonitors on Twitter — h/t to @StrokesTrivia — has 11 tracks.
@sseaver3 11 and 3.

The bad news, according to @themonitors, is that only a small number of those tracks are good. Before getting to The Monitor’s review of the record, let me remind you that this is only one publication’s review and that this record, by all accounts, takes the biggest step away from the Strokes’ classic sound.
With that said, brace yourself.
@michaellaudrup4 There’s a hint of Bootylicious to the opening riff, too…

The chorus of track 4 is remarkably similar to Technotronic’s ‘Get Up! (Before the Night is Over)’. This is very weird. #Strokes #NewAlbum

Track 5 – the mellowest thing they’ve ever done. Track 6 – the punkiest thing they’ve ever done. Both are pretty good actually. #Strokes

Back to the #Strokes new album, and after a brief blip of decent music in the middle, it’s back into the musical sewer.
— The Monitors (@themonitorscom) February 6, 2013
Reactions: “Sounds like someone trying to be the #Strokes” / “Like Duran Duran trying to be the Strokes” / “Like someone having a stroke.”

I'll continue trying to post interesting Tweets, good or bad.

The NME review sounds pretty amazing actually. Fuck I can’t wait to hear it!!!
Yeah, I think the review sounds like its trying its best to sound positive, which isn’t really comforting to know. I don’t feel as excited for the album now.. I just miss the rock n roll
@nicki
Exactly what I was thinking! I don’t need to read anything else. I feel it’s going to be great.
This seems like an album that needs multiple listens before it registers
i have no idea if i’m going to like Comedown Machine or not, but what i do know is that i’m happy to love a band that is never going to stay in one place. they are always going to push forward and try new things. i love ITI and ROF as much as anyone, and should i need to listen to them, i have them forever do so. but i don’t want to hear those records poorly rehashed, like some old man desperate to recapture his youth. if i wanted that, i’d go listen to the interminably dull Killers/KOL/Black Keys. i want change and if the cool-as-milk OWT is anything to go by, that’s what i’ll get with CDN MCHN. The Strokes were always the most progressive of their peers, and i’m happy to be around to witness their continued evolution.
For all Bowie albums I needed time to fall in love. But then it become pure magic. So, it’s OK with me.
@sunstoke_house
I think exactly the same. I don’t want them to be Status Quo, its dull. I want new things and I want to feel their passion. It’s not important if it’s delivered through synths, falsetto or serpentine guitars. I have enormous faith in their music choices.
Well from reading all those reviews, I’m really excited for All The Time, 50-50 and 80′s Comedown Machine, then. And also for Call it Fate, Call it Karma. The other one’s really scare me, like really scare me….
Maybe Tap Out could be good? Hope so. They always have good intro tracks in their LPs…
If it has 5 decent songs I’m happy.
