Although completely off topic, “Is This It” was ranked the 4th best album of all time by NME this week

2 Wolfsie October 24, 2013 at 12:03 am

@MikeB
4th? That is great – I’ve been waiting for the full list to come out online. I saw that The Queen is Dead was number 1.

I’m buying my tickets to see Albert tomorrow. The Paris venue looks really small – 500 person limit!

3 squirrel October 24, 2013 at 12:39 am

So few shows, I guess I’ll have to ‘travel for Strokes’ again… Anyone going to Glasgow? Would love to meet up!

4 Wolfsie October 24, 2013 at 5:47 am

Guys, the Paris tickets are on sale now thru FNAC. Got mine already!!

5 the modern age October 24, 2013 at 6:30 am

@Wolfsie and squirrel, I wish I could go with you! :(

Anyone going to the DC show? I got my tickets!

6 Tannk October 24, 2013 at 10:24 am

Anyone going to the NYC show?

7 the modern age October 24, 2013 at 10:27 am

Tannk, maybe you’ll see Julian this time! I wouldn’t be surprised at all if more of TS go to that one.

8 SAS October 24, 2013 at 1:25 pm

See the NME is doing a retrospective review of Room on Fire in next weeks issue as well….

9 Anth October 24, 2013 at 4:03 pm

I’m going to the DC show. Don’t realize it was the first show of the US tour. Makes it even more rad.

12 squirrel October 24, 2013 at 6:26 pm

Can’t stop refreshing that damn page now. And the twitter tag. And their facebook. What if it’s true? OMG.

18 squirrel October 25, 2013 at 7:38 am

^ Oh wow, that’s yet another one. My bad. The one I saw yesterday had Julian in the line-up, it’s this one – http://goo.gl/ScmRyN They’re most likely all fake.

@Matt
Wow thanks! I hadn’t had a chance to see that yet-so thanks for posting it! :)

@errrybody
I so do appreciate that Albert really has been the band “communicator” lately. Without his Tweets and interviews things would feel a lot bleaker. And he really does a great job on these interviews – esp speaking about TS.

But tbh – I do wish Julian was more visible and doing some communicating. I am hoping he doesn’t become too comfortable with his new Behind the Scenes Job. Esp since he never really liked “standing in the light field”. lol.

If what he recorded in LA IS solo stuff – do y’all think he will tour? – like Albert’s doing?
I really really hope so.

21 Kinger October 26, 2013 at 6:29 am

@Annie 1251

I agree with you Annie. But sometimes I think that Albert is the only member of The Strokes.

Man, haven’t said “Strokes” in awhile. :(

22 the modern age October 27, 2013 at 11:03 am

Lou Reed :(((

I saw him 4 or 5 years ago in Philly and one of the first things he said was “I don’t fucking feel like playing what you guys probably want to hear tonight […]” (something to that effect) and then proceeded to play a lot of lesser known songs. It it was a really cool show.

23 squirrel October 27, 2013 at 11:09 am

Damn. This truly caught me by surprise, I’m shocked. RIP. :(

24 Tannk October 27, 2013 at 11:24 am

As much as I am upset Julian isnt in the spotlight and releasing new music, I have to say the Cult Records lineup is filling the void with great new music. I would have never heard of exclamation pony (which now got me in to The Cribs), Rey Pila, or Reputante. All of which are amazing. I had already like The Virgins and Har Mar but their newest albums on Cult are by far better than anything they have put out in the past.
I just got tickets to the Cult show in NYC with Exclamation Pony Rey Pila & Reputante. Can’t wait to go!

25 Adam October 27, 2013 at 2:54 pm

Bummed about Lou. If you haven’t discovered the Velvet Underground, I implore you to seek out “Velvet Underground & Nico” and listen to it all the way through. Without Lou and VU, the Strokes as we know them would not exist.

Sadly, but almost appropriately, the “biggest” music-related news story today is of Chris Brown’s arrest for assault in DC…

26 squirrel October 27, 2013 at 4:43 pm

Julian’s tweet was simple yet heartbreaking. :(

@Adam,
That one’s a classic but I also specifically recommend Loaded, since: “In the beginning, the Strokes definitely drew from the vibe of the Velvets. I listened to Loaded all the time when we started the band, while I was writing my first songs. – Julian” (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/100-greatest-artists-of-all-time-19691231/the-velvet-underground-20110420)

27 Annie 1251 October 27, 2013 at 5:31 pm

Lou Reed- RIP. As a little tribute- here is the Filter Interview from 2004 when The Strokes met their idol. Take a few minutes to read it if you can. It’s wonderful.

http://www.shesfixingherhair.co.uk/blog/interviews/interviews-filter-magazine-feb-2004

Fave part:
“By the way, I heard your album,” Lou interrupts the discussion of Andy and the Velvets to redirect attention onto the five young men before him. “We were listening to it in the studio,” he says, flatly, his voice all smoke and gravel, not realizing that he is about to make the day of every person in the room. “It was great. All those great guitar parts. You know, it’s very difficult to play like that. It sounds simple, but it’s not easy to do. I thought it was great that bands are making music like that again.”

Julian is beside himself, and simply cannot contain a smile. He sits up eagerly, abandoning his detached repose and says with meaning, with force. “None of it would have happened without you. We wouldn’t be here without you.” Everyone nods.

28 Annie 1251 October 27, 2013 at 6:19 pm

@Taank
I totally agree that Cult is putting out some amazing music and I am thrilled! Julian and co. apparently has some great taste in music. I am particularly loving Reputante. And you’re right – it is kinda filling the void.
Also – so you are going to the Mercury Lounge? That’s so cool! :) I’ve only stopped in there to take pictures. lol. “Feel like a tourist in the big city…….”

@Adam
Chris Brown is such an idiot.

@Squirrel
Julian sure can convey a lot in a few words.

29 Gibson October 27, 2013 at 6:37 pm

I fudging love cult!! Especially Reputante!!

R.I.P Lou Reed. Thank you for everything.

30 WHATTHEFUCKWHASTHAT October 27, 2013 at 6:58 pm

RIP Lou Reed.

And, Julian’s excerpt on the 100 Greatest Artists of all Time where he talked about VU and Lou Reed

31 WHATTHEFUCKWHASTHAT October 27, 2013 at 7:00 pm

good tribute to his band and legacy as an artist

32 Tannk October 27, 2013 at 7:57 pm

@ Annie123, I love Reputante also! The singer has a great voice, he definitely has that drawn out, crooning, old julian style of singing. Just imagine if Julian was singing those songs!!

Here are two live videos of them that I love,

Sooo good! Cant wait to seem em with the other Cult bands next month..

33 Dracula's Lunch October 27, 2013 at 9:08 pm

It’s sadly fitting that the opening track to The Velvet Underground’s first record is “Sunday Morning” and Lou died at that very time. I usually don’t care when famous people die but Lou’s death really made me sad today. But it was great going on Twitter and seeing everyone talk about and post all of his brilliant music. This one’s always been a favorite of mine.

Dracula’s Lunch-

I love that song. Recently discovered this less polished version, which I might like even better than the version you posted: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdHGX-AMYvs

Then there’s the instrumental version from Another View, a fantastic little jam:

And the version from Lou’s self-titled solo album:

35 adagio October 28, 2013 at 10:23 am

Still bummed about Lou.People dont appreciate what they have until they lost it.

Btw I was checking Cults instagram and found this video.Is it me or something strokes or julianesque-sounding stuff playing in the background? I thought it be something indeed since its Cult Records office…

36 squirrel October 28, 2013 at 10:51 am

@Annie 1251,
Thank you for posting that interview! I’d completely forgotten about it, and it’s easily one of the best interviews I’ve ever read. This is probably my favourite part – because it’s so honest and puts aside controversy and hype & basically sums up what The Strokes are/mean to me:
“The thing is, it’s a myth. There is no mystery. There are no ghosts in the hall. There’s nothing exciting happening backstage. Andy knew this is it’s why he wanted art to be plain and mass-produced and real – vital only in its connection to reality. The Strokes know it, and it’s the reason they hate journalists. They’re just regular guys. Nick’s kind of antsy. Fab’s a bit insecure. Albert’s a socialite. Nikolai is painfully shy. Julian, up close, is kind of goofy and a little greasy. I know it’s not nice to say (and really, you’re not supposed to say such things. You’re supposed to get along and be polite and write things which are fawning and obsequious – but it’s a fucking lie). We’re all like this. Narcissistic and greedy and shy and goofy and antsy (and totally polite, and quite smart at times, and funny – and in the case of the Strokes, brilliantly talented at the one thing they just want people to focus on: music). We’re all all of these things.”

@Tannk & Annie,
Completely agree with both of you about Cult Records. I love how they’re creating the label’s very own particular identity by signing all these new acts, all very different but simultaneously with a common sound & aesthetic that brings cohesiveness to the label. I think that’s precisely how great and *ahem* cult record labels are formed.

On Lou Reed,
‘Venus in Furs’ was the first TVU song I ever listened to. I can’t quite remember where or how I came across it, but I was 14 and was mindblown by the hypnotizing & almost mantra-like sound, and how completely different it was from everything I’d heard to date. I immediately bought TVU & Nico after that. So here’s a fabulous version of ‘Venus in Furs’, from TVU’s 1st studio session – http://youtu.be/Ii_J3qJ0ba4

37 heather October 28, 2013 at 2:55 pm

Weird but true: Julian was the FIRST person I thought of when I heard about Lou Reed. I know how much his music means to him and how influential it was on the Strokes. His tweet was very sweet and heartbreaking. RIP to Lou Reed. :(

38 squirrel October 28, 2013 at 5:53 pm

@heather,
It’s interesting you should say that, me too. I immediately thought of him, specifically of an interview in which he talked about how star-struck & intimidated he was when he first met him (at a book shop, iirc) and thought ‘man, Julian will be devastated’.
