A few Governors Ball details

by Eric Van Dril · 44 comments

The Strokes and Julian Casablancas, as you know, are playing Governors Ball in NYC in June. The Governors Ball team are doing a Reddit AMA today about the festival as a whole, and they just said is the tentative plan is for Julian to play Friday and the Strokes to play on Saturday.

They explained how they landed the Strokes (via Wolfsie).

First of all, congrats on the amazing lineup! One of the best surprises for me was The Strokes. What kind of black magic did you use to get them out of hibernation?

We have tried to book The Strokes every single year that Gov Ball has existed. They essentially have had an open invite to play when they wanted. We got a call from their agent at the very last minute, saying that they wanted to reunite and play at the festival. Dream come true for us. We’re New York City kids, and they are the greatest NYC rock band of our generation. BOOM -JW

Also, Albert was asked what songs from Comedown Machine he’d like to play live on Twitter.

Put Slow Animals on that list AHJ and it would be perfect.

Seriously though the more news that come out the more excited I become about a concert I’m not even going to haha. I hope they come to England once again, preferably London. I want to see them live at least once in my life.

4 R Guy January 22, 2014 at 3:24 pm

I want a new JC single already! You would think we are getting very close…

Notice how Albert didn’t choose the single “All The Time”. However, i’m glad that he chose the more popular ones from the fans.

P.S. I WANT TO LISTEN TO ONE WAY TRIGGER LIVE SO BAD!!!

7 Kinger January 22, 2014 at 5:32 pm

An older tweet from today from AHJ…

“@JamesLanee: @alberthammondjr Do u think u guys, The Strokes will play songs off Comedown Machine during @GovBallNYC?”

I sure hope so

8 yeah January 22, 2014 at 6:50 pm

. “It will be Julian’s first South American show on this tour. Visit http://www.lollapaloozacl.com/sideshows for ticket info.”

Yay! so maybe he will do other shows before!

I hate to be a Debbie Downer on all of this….

but the surprise announcement out of the blue….

…even band members being surprised…..

the face that the lead singer is performing SOLO at the SAME festival….

…and a general malaise from the rest of the band members….

Is there any chance that this is “Good-bye?” The final Strokes show (for the forseable future?)

You’d think “Oh, if they wanted to do that they’d do a big Madison Square Garden solo show.” Well, they already did that three years ago.

Maybe they just figure it’s not working anymore and want to play one last time for the fans before they move onto other projects and their separate lives.

Just a thought.

Brian

11 Fredrik Andresen January 23, 2014 at 7:49 am

Brian, I had the same thought.
But i would prefer if they made an album on Cult!
Actually I do think they’d want to ‘call it quits’ after they make a final album on Cult records.
Kinda seems unlikely they would have time to make solo stuff and keep on with stroke sttuff. Maybe an album or two. Only they know. Anyways. I’m excited for the concert!

12 yeah January 23, 2014 at 8:13 am

anybody think its funny how they said “reunion show” but anyway from now on i see the strokes always playing but one off shows, i don’t think we’ll ever see another full tour but i don’t really care. as long as people keep making music.

13 the modern age January 23, 2014 at 8:32 am

I know for a fact this is not the last Strokes show, although I do think it’s going to be the only one this year. It’s great Julian and TS are playing in the same weekend, it’s clear they’re supporting one another or that wouldn’t be happening. I cannot wait for Voidz or Space Jam or whatever it’s going to be called!

I am so pumped about GB our #1 goal is to be in the front row. Has anyone here been to this festival before? What’s the situation with the ferries? Do people wait for hours is is it fairly easy to get one?

14 Wolfsie January 23, 2014 at 9:17 am

Why are you all so freakin negative all the time? There’s nothing to indicate its their last show. Sometimes I think you people just want to suck every tiny bit of joy out of every piece of news we get!! Can’t you just enjoy the exciting stuff that is happening without looking for the worst all the time?!

15 Eric Van Dril January 23, 2014 at 10:13 am

I agree with Wolfsie. You all need to chill with the last show before they break up statements. Albert’s said multiple times that touring as The Strokes is very difficult, and the fact that this show is in NYC means they don’t have to hire a tour manager, they don’t have to rent semis to transport their stuff, etc. They can just show up, play and then continue on with their summer.

16 Christian January 23, 2014 at 2:56 pm

Will they ever tour the continent? ? ?

17 squirrel January 23, 2014 at 3:07 pm

This is really off-topic but I just realized that the lead singer of Reputante is none other than James Levy. Like, wow. How bloody bizarre / awkward is that…

18 Gibson January 23, 2014 at 3:22 pm

Whats even more bizarre is that the drummer for Reputante is Raviv Ullman. A Star of a Disney Channels sitcom

19 squirrel January 23, 2014 at 3:39 pm

Haha, indeed. But the James Levy thing makes me wonder if all that whole story involving Julian was even real in the first place… It all seems pretty implausible right now.

20 Gibson January 23, 2014 at 4:22 pm

what story?

21 squirrel January 23, 2014 at 4:37 pm

The one about ‘Rotten Love’ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovyNVQXBZoY). James dated Regina Spektor for quite a while back in 2004/2005… She was unfaithful to him and he wrote that song about the affair she’d had – by all accounts with none other than Julian.
Here’s some more deets I wasn’t even aware of until just now: http://thepopcop.co.uk/2008/01/bizarre-levy-triangle/

22 AutomaticStop January 23, 2014 at 9:47 pm

The last show thing is far fetched, but it does scare me a little that they’re finally playing GB. If they wanted to end their career in a festival, this one would make sense. But I don’t see a break up anytime soon. TS is the way these guys make a living. Sure, maybe they’ve been wise with their $ or inherited millions, but as far as a job that creates income for them, TS is it. None of the 5 would make anywhere near what they make with TS. As you get older and have families, that can become more important. There’s no unstable personality that would cause a break up. Julian is not Axl Rose and even if he becomes huge I don’t see him abandoning something like TS. That said, there are 5 members and maybe all it takes is for one of them to simply not want to be in the band anymore, for the rest to call it quits. But it’s far more likely for them to go into hiding for 5 years and then resurface, than announcing they are finished for good. That they are playing GB is a very positive sign for the band.

23 Wolfsie January 23, 2014 at 11:17 pm

@Squirrel
I knew the story but had forgotten the name of the “other guy” so never made the connection. That is bizarre!

24 Zeta January 24, 2014 at 3:07 am

I think they just shaked hands and crossed their swords over Regina

25 muthastone January 24, 2014 at 7:09 am

the day of the AMA on reddit, the governor’s ball guys mentioned something like “we are pumped that Gov Ball will be where the strokes stage their big comeback”

but it looks like it was deleted. anyone else see this? or am i crazy haha?

26 yeah January 24, 2014 at 8:57 am

the strokes are a mystery…”Madonna Voice”

27 Andres January 24, 2014 at 9:00 am

28 Sadface :'( January 24, 2014 at 5:26 pm

It would be terrible if The Strokes were to break up after this like some of you guys are saying.

29 Karl Fredrik January 25, 2014 at 4:53 am

We are three Norwegian guys going to Gov Ball. Long trip, but with a killer line-up like that its no question. Songs from CM that I would prefer:

- Fast Animals
- Happy Ending
- W2J
- 50/50
- 1WT

I also hope TS include Ize and VoD from FIOE! A nice surprise would be Instant Crush.

30 squirrel January 25, 2014 at 6:02 am

@Wolfsie
I’d been *years* since I’d last thought about that story or heard of James Levy! But then like 2 days ago his name randomly popped up somewhere, and I read “lead singer of Reputante” and my jaw literally dropped.

31 Tannk January 25, 2014 at 6:05 pm

I would love to see Fast Animals live.

Rotten Love is a great song! I love everything James Levy has done, especially the Blood Red Rose albums! He was also super nice when I met him at the Cult show.. I am surprised Reputante hasn’t been more successful..

I also read somewhere that James Levy wrote some of those songs about Regina cheating on him with Julian, but that was 2005 and didnt she go out with Julian in 2003/04?

The Strokes need to put up a fun and engaging show, in order to quell rumors of their imminent demise.

34 Nauje January 26, 2014 at 7:03 am

Bit off-topic but man I love how Nick has panties on his guitar and pulls his hood up like a badass in this live version of ‘What Ever Happened’ ahaha

35 Annie 1251 January 26, 2014 at 1:26 pm

Well I haven’t posted in so long I dont even know where to start! thanks who ever was asking about me…nice to be thought of even if it’s just all my obnoxious posting that is missed lol.

HOLY HELL JULIAN SOLO AND THE STROKES IN ONE CONCERT- we sure didnt see that coming did we?
Even when Julian told us New stuff is coming -who knew he meant THAT.

So I’m a little EXCITED TO SAY THE LEAST.
Can’t WAIT to hear Julian’s new stuff. Can’t wait to hear new music from that fantastic musical brain of his.
Can’t WAIT to see JC solo and TS live. It’s gonna be Epic. sounds like a corny word but who cares
it totally fits this insane event.

Wondering what TS setlist will be. Unlike some of you I won’t mind at all if they play Someday and Last Nite.
I will be thrilled. I’m so pumped they could play the alphabet song and that would be fine haha.

36 the modern age January 26, 2014 at 2:10 pm

Annie, the alphabet song lmao! I have to agree, we’re so starved for live shows I’ll take anything they want to play. I would love to hear FIOE and CM stuff but we’ll have to see what they decide. I hope Julian leaks a new song soon.

37 Tommy Pickles January 26, 2014 at 8:32 pm

I’m pretty sure Julian just won a grammy because Random Access Memories won best dance/electronica album. Not that the grammys hold any real value or anything.

38 JP January 26, 2014 at 8:40 pm

^— Legittt! —^

39 Annie 1251 January 26, 2014 at 9:57 pm

Yeah Tommy Rich Priest tweeted me back and he said YES Julian got the grammy kuz he was a writer for RAM! The announcer said his name a couple of times!

SO COOL GO JULIAN!

40 TuPapi January 26, 2014 at 10:31 pm

I’d love to see them play Slow Animals, W2J, 80′s Comedown Machine, and 1wtrggr live! Hoping there’s at least some youtube material from Govsball!

41 TuPapi January 26, 2014 at 10:32 pm

Congrats to Jules on the Grammy, even though its shit.

Hi would you mind letting me know which web host you’re utilizing?
I’ve loaded your blog in 3 completely different browsers and I must say
this blog loads a lot quicker then most. Can you recommend a good web hosting provider at a fair price?
Thanks, I appreciate it!
